1910 - 2015

Mrs. Vesta Zimmerly Mattie of Frederick, passed away on Saturday, May 2, 2015, in her residence at the age of 105. Born on May 1, 1910 in McClusky, North Dakota, she was the daughter of the late Jacob Truman and Josephine Blanche Preston Zimmerly. Vesta earned her master's degree in Botany from Ohio State University in 1949. She moved to Frederick in 1950 and married Anthony Mattie in 1955, who passed away in 1969. she worked at Fort Detrick at the Vegetation Control Lab, retiring in 1971. She moved to Homewood at Crumland farms in 2000 where she formed many fine friendships. Mrs. Mattie was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Frederick and was active in garden club, bridge club, the gem and mineral club, and meals on wheels, delivering meals to the elderly into her 80's.

Surviving are one sister, Bessie Zimmerly Terrell of Greensboro, NC as well as many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 2-5 PM on Tuesday May 5, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. Graveside services and interment will take place at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, May 6, at Mount Olivet Cemetery, with Pastor Suzanne Morris, Homewood Chaplain officiating. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Friends of Meals on Wheels of Frederick County, 198 Thomas Johnson Drive, Suite 9, Frederick, MD 21702 or Calvary United Methodist Church, 131 West Second Street, Frederick, Maryland 21701.
