Not sure what to say?

While you were preparing for your final trip, I was going through tangled memories to make sure there were no topics that needed to be discussed before your departure. I was quite certain that we had a clean slate … until my first day back at work.

The first day back at work started with an 8:00 am meeting with the executive team. It was one of those meetings epitomizing corporate bureaucracy. I was thinking that you and I could share a few chuckles at IBM’s expense on our call that night. Then it struck me that the slate wasn’t clean. It wasn’t that we didn’t talk about something before you left … it was the fact that one of my best buddies was gone. Now I know I should have told you how much I would miss you.

I hope you are safe, happy and listening.

Bert and Kathleen were our neighbors for a number of years when we first moved to Florida in 1991. No matter how bad he may have felt, Bert always had a smile and a nice word. We always admired Bert as an accomplished man with a great career that he loved. Kathleen and Bert seemed to be the perfect match for each other. We haven't been in contact for a number of years but miss Kathleen and Bert as neighbors. Until we meet again as neighbors in Heaven. God Bless.

I am honored that Bert included me among the circle of friends who were contacted when his health was failing. He was a wonderful friend at Horace Mann and Camp Moosilauke, and I am very grateful that we stayed in close touch into the new century and that Bert and Kathleen made it to our most recent class reunions in New York (the last one was in 2004).

There are hundreds of memories, but here is one which just crossed my mind. We used to hang out at a jazz club in Greenwich Village called Nick's (where they had absolutely no inhibitions about selling alcohol to fifteen year olds) and who should walk in to jam with the house musicians but the great man himself, Fats Waller. An upright piano stood facing the band stand, and Fats wanted it placed at right angles to the band stand so that he could see the band and the audience at the same time. Bert and I were hanging out by the piano, and Fats said , "Give me a hand boys," and we moved the piano for him and he played a great set after the head waiter supplied him with a glass of gin. Bert and I were on cloud 9 that night.

We met in the ninth grade in 1940. Thanks for 69 years of loving memories and sincere affection, Bert !

Kathleen & Family,
Claudia and I send our condolences. Bert was a special man who brought humor to everything he did. He certainly was a serious businessman when he had to be but laughed at the circumstances later. I learned so much from him early in my career and never forgot those late night breakfasts in Danville. Thank you Bert, with love.

Bert was a very special friend and I will always be thankful for his special efforts he made during a trying time in San Leandro. During a difficult time for me in trying to get a poorly designed Kool-Aid plant, he worked night and day, weekends until we solved the problem. I am so thankful that in our laterdays we resumed our friendship and his daily e-mails were always enjoyable.

I will miss him very much.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Prettyman family. I had the pleasure of working at the SL Maxwell House plant while Bert was the plant manager. Bert was an excellent leader and businessman.

Bert was a unique person, equally at home with executives and factory employees. He had friends in both areas.
I'll miss our weekly conversations, his sage advice and humor. He was one of a kind.
Louise shares these sentiments and enjoyed Bert and Kathleen's get togethers.

To the family,

Words, however kind, can't mend your heartache: but those who care and share your loss wish you comfort and peace of mind. May you find strength in the love of family and in the warm embrace of friends.

It will be the little things that you will remember, the quite moments, the smiles, the laughter. And although it may seem hard right now, it will be the memories of these little things that help to push away the pain and bring the smiles back again.

With Sincerest Sympathy
