Robert Smith Obituary

Robert "Bob" Smith, age 90, died August 20, 2014 in Petaluma. Born in New Jersey, Bob attended school in Bloomfield before going to Long Island University in the 1940s. He earned a degree in Mathematics and was a talented athlete on the LIU Blackbirds basketball team. He was indicted into the LIU Hall of Fame in 2009. Bob was proud to enlist in the Marine Corps in 1942 and served during World War II, Korea and Viet Nam. One of his many assignments was as coach to the Hawaii Marines Basketball team which he led to victory in the first Rainbow Classic in 1964. He retired in 1969. Bob was an Honorary Life Member of the SIR Petaluma Branch 58 and spoke often of his experiences and travel with the group. He could always be seen in a crowd wearing his red US Marines hat. Bob will be missed by his daughters Monica Zunino, Renae Irek and step-daughter Valerie Rankin, grand-daughters Jennifer Zunino and Alana Gonzales and great grandchildren Mason, Aidan and Ava Renae. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospice by the Bay, 17 E. Sir Francis Drake Blvd., Larkspur, CA 94939. Semper Fi and Aloha!

As a wife of a SIR, I felt welcome on the SIRs outings due to Bob's warm and fun personality. I can still see him in his colorful Hawaiian shirt saying "Aloha!" on the bus. A final "Aloha!" to you Bob.
