Anthony Hancher Obituary

Tony "Rollo" Hancher passed away Saturday at home at the age of 89.

Born in Frackville, he was a son of the late Mary and Anthony Han-cher Sr.

He attended Frackville schools and graduated in 1942.

A Navy veteran, Tony served on the USS Benevolence and USS Pasadena as pharmacist mate first class in the World War II Pacific Theatre.

In 1947, he married Helen Harvest and they raised two children, Dennis and Debra. They were happily married for 62 years.

Mr. Hancher retired from Alcoa after 27 years. He was a lifelong member of the Rev. James Hogan Knights of Columbus Council 2580, BPO Elks Lodge 1533, American Legion Post 398 and an active parishioner at St. Michael Ukrainian Catholic Church, all of Frackville.

Tony was an avid golfer, twice achieving a hole in one. All his life he enjoyed watching and playing sports.

He was involved in the county Teener baseball league for 10 years. He was head coach of Frackville Teener team that won two county championships. His most treasured memories are of the boys he coached. He kept up with them long after their days on the field ended.

Tony was one of Schuylkill County's most avid Philly fans.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Mary, Eli and Evelyn. His wife, Helen, passed away in October 2009.

Tony is survived by his son, Dennis and his wife, Kimberly, Bethesda Md.; Tony's daughter, Debra Halupa and her husband, Dr. Michael Halupa, Frackville; a sister, Pauline Fecho, Reading; a brother, Ronald Hancher, Harrisburg.

Tony loved his grandchildren and they truly loved him. They are his legacy: Kelly Huerta and her husband, Jon, Amanda Hancher, Joseph Hancher, Anthony Halupa, Tanya Halupa and the youngest, Sarah. His namesake, Anthony Halupa, was very close with his grandfather.

Panaheda services will be held at 9:15 a.m. Thursday from Albert L. Gricoski Funeral Home, Frackville. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Michael Ukrainian Catholic Church with the Rev. Roman Pitula as the celebrant. Relatives and friends are invited to a visitation from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Parastas service will be at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will take place again from 8 to 9:15 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Interment with military honors will be in St. Michael's Parish Cemetery, Englewood, Frackville. Donations can be made in tony's name to St. Michael's Church Memorial Fund, 243 S. Middle St., Frackville, PA 17931.

Our sincere condolences to all of his loved ones who have to say goodbye. He truly had a great life and was a great man who was the perfect example of what a Dad and pap should be. To me he was my second father as a child. We will miss "Tex" - what I called him because he wore boots. I hope he and my Dad are rekindling their friendship. Love and prayers to you all.
