James LYONS Obituary

LYONS, James Anthony "Tony"Age 68. Passed away on July 20, 2012. Preceded in death by his parents, Hillman and Wilmuth Lyons. He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Siobhan Maria Lyons, and daughter, Sara Lyons. Tony served his country in the US Army during the Vietnam War. When Tony returned home, he worked as a Studio Engineer then went on to become an on air personality for WSM Radio and Television, announcing for the Grand Ole Opry and for WSIX Radio. After working with music, radio and television, Tony owned and operated Mulligans Pub for 22 years. The funeral mass will be held Tuesday, July 24, 2012, 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church with Father Joe McMahon officiating. Active Pallbearers will be David Diaz-Barriga, Billy Hynd, Jerry Matthews, Sean McNamara, John Rafter, Matthew Smith, Damon Spiceland, and Michael Venters. Interment will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, 4-8 p.m. and Tuesday, 9-9:45 a.m. at Spring Hill Funeral Home. Over the last eight months, St. Joseph Church, St. Joseph School, and St. Cecilia Academy have showered Tony's family with overwhelming love and support. Memorial gifts in memory of Tony Lyons can be made to St. Cecilia Academy, 4210 Harding Road, Nashville, TN 37205, Financial Assistance Fund for his daughter. Tony you and Siobhan were basically my family away from home while I was in the military. You showed me nothing but support and love while I was deployed, and made me feel more at home in Nashville than when I was back home in Illinois. Ii remember Tony Lyons from his days with WSM both during the week and on the Opry on the weekends. He was one of my most favorite announcers during the 1970s and early 1980s. Though he had left WSM by the time I came to Nashville permanently, I always will remember his smooth delivery and great style of announcing. My heart goes out to his family and he will always be remembered as long as I live.

I worked with Tony at WSM Radio during the "good ole days" of music. He was a joy to be around and loved to make people laugh. He lives on in our memories.

Tony was a broadcasting colleague during his WSM days. While I was surprised by his later career change, I was not surprised that he continued to be successful in his new undertaking.

Tony was admired by coworkers and competitors alike. I lost touch with him after he left WSM but I remember him for his kindness and consideration for other people.

Tony's life was short but he accomplished so much within the time he was given.

He will be long remembered by his friends and fans.
