HAROLD LAMAR Obituary


HAROLD T. LAMAR  
Harold Thomas "Harry" Lamar, a native of Illinois, and a longtime resident of Kensington, Maryland, passed away on January 16, 2015, at the Gardiner Home, Hospice of the Valley, in Phoenix, Arizona. He was 89. Mr. Lamar was preceded in death by his parents, Otis Lamar and Edna (Davis) Lamar, his first wife, Dorothy Solnitzky Lamar, and two sisters, Marcella Lamar Weaver and Anita Lamar Stack. He is survived by his second wife, Cora (Cokie) Carman Lamar, two children from his first marriage, Susan Lamar Metz and her husband David Metz, and Richard Lamar, three grandchildren, Dorothy Parmelee, Sarah Metz and Jeanette Lamar, and three great-grandchildren. Mr. Lamar served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII and flew 45 missions over Northern Italy, Austria, Yugoslavia and Southern Germany. He received the Western Europe Service Medal and an Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters. After the war he attended the University of Illinois, Champaign and George Washington University in Washington, DC, where he earned a B.A. in Government. After working briefly for the Borden Milk Company in Chicago, he returned to the Washington, DC area and pursued a career in the field of international trade policy. He worked for several U.S. Federal government agencies, including the Library of Congress, the Army Corp of Engineers and the Department of Commerce. In 1967 he joined the staff of the House Ways and Means Committee as an international trade analyst, rising to the position of Staff Director of the Subcommittee on Trade, before he retired in 1980.Mr. Lamar was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Kensington. Following his move to Phoenix, he joined the North Valley Church of Christ, where he served as a deacon.A memorial service will be held at the North Valley Church of Christ, 5413 East Desert Vista Trail, Cave Creek, AZ 85331 on Saturday, January 24, 2015, at 3 p.m. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Gardiner Home, Hospice of the Valley, 1522 West Myrtle Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85021, or Doctors Without Borders.
