Barb, Teresa, Connor, Garrett and the Block family,
I fondly remember Phil's rosy cheeks, his booming voice, and the mischevious twinkle in his eye. He was truly an amazing man. My family's thoughts and prayers are with you all during this difficult time.

Barb & Family
Very sorry to hear of the passing of Phil. Your family has always meant alot to us as neighbors for many years and more particularly the great time I had coaching Bob. Phil was a true pioneer spirit and will certainly be missed. Sorry I couldn't make the services but circumstances prevented me from attending. If there is anything I can do for you please call. You were great neighbors and good friends. Please accept our sincere sympathy for your loss at this time.

We were sorry to hear about Phil's death and want to extend our sincere condolences to Barbara and their family.
Altho it is some years since we relocated to Hawaii, we remember Phil from back in the '60's and his generosity to neighbors.
His peaceful repose will be in our prayers as well as the family well-being.

My most sincere condolences to you Barbara. I especially remember the time Phil did not want me to fly back to Barrow with Bobbie Fisher. He thought it wasn't prudent/safe to fly Anchorage to Barrow in a single engine plane just out of the repair shop. And he wanted to buy me my ticket. We made it OK but the flight was not without it's own out of the ordinary events! He was a good man. Love and prayers to you all.

My condolences to the Block family. You are in my prayers. Thank you for sharing such a wonderful man with us at Alaska Airlines. He has been greatly missed since his retirement, but never, ever forgotten. And never will be. A true Legend. Top notch pilot. Wonderful friend and mentor. Thank you Phil. Godspeed!

We have wonderful memories of Capt Phil's visits to our house in Nome starting in the late 1950's...and even have a family member's portrait that was based on a photo Phil took. He leaves a legacy of kindness and will be fondly remembered.

I met Phil Block when I flew to Alaska in 1950. He was working as a "gas boy" for Jack Carr at Merrill Field. We became good friends and when he joined Alaska Airlines, he became my co-pilot. I checked Phil out as Capt. on the Convair 240. Lots of laughs and great memories. A "True Alaskan" Phil will be missed.

I worked for Alaska Airlines back in 1980-1986, and the days I worked as an Ops Agent, Capt Block insisted that I read the weather to him when he called in, I was terrified. But because of his persistence, I did it! He was such a happy person, great memories.

Phil was one of the first pilots I met when I started with Alaska Airlines in 1977 in Yakutat..he was one of a kind and made a lasting impression on me. No nonsense and very professional although he loved to play some pranks on our ground crew. We enjoyed a friendship as all Alaska employees did who knew Phil. He was missed after he retired, and will be missed more now that he's gone. My condolences to his family.
God Bless you Phil.

My condolences to Barbara and family. It is great sadness to lose a husband and father.
I met Phil in the summer of 1956. My cousin, Keith Smith, Phil's good friend, introduced us when I was home from WSC. I was smitten with his good looks and great sense of humor. This summer romance was destined to failure with the long distance between the UW and WSC in Pullman, WA.
Anyway, I'm glad that Phil met Barbara. That was his good luck. Keith said that Barbara was a saint. My uncle, Roy Holdiman, a former Alaskan bush pilot, was also Phil's good friend.
I recently was able to talk to Phil and Barbara. I know that he is with the good people in the life hereafter.

That photo is exactly how I remember you growing up, Uncle Phil. Those red cheeks and, happy or yelling at us kids, always a twinkle in your eye! Love you Aunt Barbara, Paddy, Bobby and Teresa - take care!

Oh I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter silvered wings:
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of, wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence hovering there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air
Up, up the long delirious, burning blue
I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even Eagle flew.
And while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untresspassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.
God speed, Dad. Until we meet again, may God hold you in the Palm of His Hand. Love, Teresa

I met Phil through his daughter Paddy and her husband Vince, only to find that his father and my father worked together in the 1940s. Phil's life in Alaska wove a strand in the fabric of Alaskan life that touched thousands of people and with his family helped strengthen that fabric like a true pioneer. We were so lucky have Phil as a fellow Alaska.

We have lost a good man who was not only a husband, a father, and a friend, but who was also living history, the likes of which Alaska will never see again. He is aloft again on new wings . . .
