Monty Williams Obituary

Anchorage resident, Monty G. Williams, 72, passed away on July 20, 2013 at his residence after losing his battle with lung cancer.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 25, at First Assembly of God Church, 15th and C Street, Anchorage. Joel and Monte Williams will officiate.

Monty was born November 2, 1940, in Grants Pass, Oregon to Melbourne and Dorothy (Inman) Williams. He graduated from Grants Pass High School in 1958 and joined the U.S. Navy. Monty married Diann G. Carroll on December 27, 1958. He honorably served 20 years active service in the Navy before retiring in 1977. During his time in the Navy, he was involved in the Cuban Missile Crisis and did four tours of Vietnam and one tour of Iceland. While stateside, he served as a meteorologist at Fleet Weather Central in Monterey, California. He finished his military career with a degree as a Race Relations Specialist. After retirement, he returned to his hometown in Grants Pass, Oregon and attended Rogue Community College graduating with a degree in counseling and criminal justice.

Monty was a lifetime member of the NRA, the Vietnam Veterans of America, a member of the Alaska Fly Fisher Association. He was active with his favorite charities, Project Healing Waters and Broken Sparrow Children's Home. He participated in fly tying competitions and won awards for his flies and his extensive participation in volunteer services. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, fly tying, family and friends.

Monty is survived by his spouse, Diann, Anchorage; son, Monte and his wife, Darlene Williams, Anchorage; daughters, Connie and her husband, Doug Robinson, Chehalis, Washington; Jana Turnbull, Anchorage; and Tarrin Williams, Anchorage. He also enjoyed his 13 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his two brothers, Martin Williams, Hermiston, Oregon; and Joel Williams, Gold Hill, Oregon.

He is preceded in death by his parents and one great granddaughter, Avianna Marie.
