Lawrence Singer Obituary

Lawrence R. Singer, 72, of Beverly Hills, Michigan, noted musician and composer, died December 27, 2012 at Beaumont Hospital from complications related to renal failure. Larry, the son of the late Dr. Nelson and Mrs. Evelyn Singer of Eastpointe, Michigan is survived by his stepmother Gloria Singer; sister Susan (Dr. Peter) Haik; niece Mishelle (David Weiner); nephew Paul (Mandi Wolfes) Miller; aunt Rhea Albert; two great nieces and nephews; numerous cousins, and long-time friend Karen DiChiera. At 16, he was the principle clarinetist in the Mt. Clemens Symphony Orchestra for two years and later performed extensively as a clarinetist and oboist in the US, Canada and Europe. He graduated from the Eastman School of Music and received an advanced composition degree in Italy under Bruno Bartolozzi His most famous symphonic work, Metamorphosis for Oboe, Violin and Orchestra, had its world premiere in 1981 at the Meadowbrook Music Festival with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. His latest work, a children's opera (Aesop's Fables), was commissioned by the Michigan Opera Theatre's Department of Community Programs Memorial contributions would be gratefully accepted for the Evelyn Marin Singer Scholarship Fund at the University of Michigan School of Music, the Michigan Opera Theatre Department of Community Programs, the Michigan Kidney Foundation, or a charity of one's choice to honor Larry's memory. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
