Daniel A. Ziskie, known to friends and family as Dan, passed away on July 21, 2025, in New York, NY, at the age of 80. Born on August 13, 1944, in Detroit, MI, Dan was a man of remarkable talent and a keen observer of life. He was as vibrant and multifaceted as the characters he portrayed on stage and screen.

Dan's early life in Detroit revealed an outstanding athletic ability, starring in high school in both track and football. It was also at the University of Michigan where he showcased his athletic prowess, excelling in track and field, and becoming a letterman in relay races. He pursued this passion for the arts there, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in English. In a few formative years following that, he delved into several occupations that fed his zest for new experiences, including serving as a crewman on a Great Lakes freighter. His love for performance led him to the Second City of Chicago, where he honed his craft among some of the most creative performers of the era.

Throughout the decades, Dan captivated audiences with his performances in theater, film, and television. He graced the stage on Broadway in productions such as "After the Fall" and "I'm Not Rappaport," and appeared in major roles in memorable television series such as "Treme" and "House of Cards." His film credits included roles in "Zebrahead" and "Adventures in Babysitting," as well as numerous regional productions. Dan's natural talent and dedication to his craft were evident in each role he played, earning him the admiration and respect of his peers.

In addition to his acting career, Dan was a gifted photographer. His eye for detail and ability to capture the essence of his subjects translated into stunning photographs that he shared with the world online. His photo book "Cloud Chamber" is a testament to his artistic vision and continues to be cherished by readers and photography enthusiasts alike.

Dan had a wide range of interests, travelling the world and yet having the time and interest to explore complex topics such as the nature of the cosmos and quantum physics. Dan's life was not only marked by his creative achievements but also by the bonds he shared with his family. He is survived by his brother David and his wife Cynthia, his nephews Jesse, Brett, and Austin, and their six children, who will miss him deeply. Dan's legacy extends beyond his family, as his colleagues and friends will remember him as a creative, thoughtful, and interesting man whose presence enriched their lives.

In the end, Dan's journey was cut short by arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease, but the stories he told, the memories he created, and the lives he touched will continue to resonate. His was a life lived with passion, a life that exemplified the beauty of pursuing one's dreams and the importance of cherishing every moment. Dan will be profoundly missed, yet he will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him, like a cherished character in the timeless narrative of their lives.

It was always much fun to see Danny at our local gym and so sad not see him there any more. He is spoken about quite a bit by the other members which keeps his memory very much alive.

I am so sorry to hear this. Dan was my neighbor for ten years. When I moved to NYC 20 years ago I was lucky enough to have moved into the apartment across the hall from him. He was friendly and kind and helped me navigate my way through my early years in the city. When my dad died unexpectedly he was empathetic and suggested that I go see Our Town at the Public Theatre. When I thought my cat died behind my bureau I went to Dan for help and of course he did and moved the bureau to reveal that the cat was in fact still alive. Every time I talked to him he had something thoughtful and interesting to say. He was smart, fun, talented, kind, and generous. He was a great person all around and I am thankful that I knew him.

I had the privilege of being Dan's classmate, roommate, teammate, and good friend at the University of Michigan, some 60 years ago. He was smart, unpretentious, and kind, and he is the funniest person I've ever known. I still remember some of his frequent spontaneous improv skits, in some of which I got to have a role. (The Great Pumpkin, Superman's Cape, and The Missing Kids come to mind.) Dan and I kept in touch reasonably well for a few years after Michigan -- and then we didn't. I'm very sad about that, and about his passing.

I was privileged to work with Dan for two years in the Chicago Extension Improvisational Theatre, a company created in the early 1970s by Del Close to solidify Del's ideas about long-form improv, "The Harold." For a few years, we were part of a close-knit circle working for little-to-no money, but doing creative work we loved and earning a place within Chicago's early Off-Loop theatre scene. Dan's scene work always was fast, sharp and clever. Somewhere in the wilderness, there is a Chicago Extension poster with photos of all of use. We remained friends after Dan joined The Second City mainstage, and last saw each other over a glass of wine or beer on the Upper West Side, after Dan moved to New York. It would have been a treat to have reconnected with Dan at some point. A good guy!

Daniel and I were blessed to join EST 50 years ago and work together both on 52nd Street and Off-Broadway throughout, nurturing our talents and friendship. He was a very unique and gifted actor. My first important play for Off-Broadway was "The Seagull" (a young Trigorin and Arcadina respectively), directed by the young, wonderful artistic director of
"Impossible Ragtime Theater",Ted Story, who just passed away last June. My heart embraces the blessing of knowing them both.

I worked with Dan on multiple episodes of TREME in New Orleans. We had a lot of downtime and he was incredibly generous with me and all of my questions about acting and his theatre experiences and his photography. A true artist and a gentleman. Rest Well Sir.

numerous times at EST. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Dan was a phenomenal actor, artist and person. I feel so lucky to have known him. Every time we would run into each other we would laugh and do something silly. Like this pic taken on August 29, 2018. He took a simultaneous picture from his camera at the same time. Wishing his family and friends comfort in this time of loss. Rest well, sweet prince.

When Uncle Dan (U-Dan as we came to call him) visited, he would always bring a smile and a great appreciation for life's hidden moments. On his last visit I remember him laying down in the grass looking straight up at tree limbs and the wide open blue sky filled with wonder as a child would be. This caught me in pause, as a reminder that this man is taking time to take that in, perhaps I too should take the time to stop and take life in. He would always take the time to appreciate life and his environment around him, no matter what the environment is. It is a lesson that has stuck with me. You will be missed U- Dan.
