Philip Okun Obituary

OKUN, Dr. Philip Dr. Philip Okun, 72, of Douglasville, Georgia, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 25, 2016 at home. Born in Richmond, Virginia to Cantor Morris and Helen Okun, he lived there until graduating from the University of Richmond and the Medical College of Virginia before moving to Kansas City to complete his medical internship at the University of Kansas, where he met his first wife and mother of his children. He later enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed as a major in San Antonio, Texas before moving to Atlanta to complete his medical residency at Emory University, where he remained throughout his life. Phil was profoundly committed to the values and practices of Conservative Judaism instilled in him by his parents and grandparents, especially in regards to serving the Jewish communities in which they've lived. His grandfather, Adolph Katchko was a cantor at Congregation Ansche Chesed in New York City, whose influence is still felt in American cantorial liturgy. His father Morris was the cantor at Temple Beth-El in Richmond, and his mother Helen (née Katchko) was the temple's senior choir director, both of whom served for more than 40 years. He remained very close to his sister Judith and regularly traveled between Atlanta and Richmond to participate in High Holiday services at Temple Beth-El which included leading overflow and alternative services at Temple Beth-El between 1960-2015 with his sister Judith, and in later years with her son Michael Belinkie. Phil was equally passionate about his professional life as a child psychiatrist at numerous hospitals and clinics, as well as his own private practices in Atlanta. He worked tirelessly to help abused children overcome their traumas and become well-adjusted individuals. However, nothing gave Phil more joy than spending time with his family. He regularly spoke to and visited his adult children and their families in St. Louis and Los Angeles. He eagerly looked forward to annual trips to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina to relax with his children, granddaughter, sister, brother-in-law and nephews. He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law Judith and Louis Belinkie, son Joel Okun, daughter and son-in-law Sherry and Derek Rudnak, and granddaughter Maggie Okun. Dr. Okun saw me and my sibling when we were young children, taking the time to make house calls. I'm sure it was not easy to gain our trust as both of us had just changed over from a beloved psychiatrist who had moved away! I remember he was a very kind, patient man. He listened to me when I was terrified of medicine and did not push me to take something I was scared of. He even reassured me when I stubbed my toe badly that it was not broken. I am very sorry to hear of his passing. It is amazing to see how many lives he made a difference in.

My deepest sympathies to Dr. Okun's family. He was my dear friend and colleague at a residential treatment program in Douglasville, GA. His wisdom and expertise were extremely valuable to me, to the staff, and to the countless children and families he helped over the years. He was extremely proud of his family and I always enjoyed hearing of his time singing with them in synagogue. I will remember his kindness, humility, wisdom, dedication, and deep concern for others. He is already greatly missed.

One of the kindest, most caring & compassionate friends I've ever known. Will miss your words of support & understanding, your subtle sense of humor, your patience & understanding, your insight & wisdom, your quiet, gentle manner & germane thoughts. I'll especially miss your tennis game with all your carefully planned shots and wonderful spins which never go where there expected.

Dr. Okun was such a gentle and kind soul. He was so good with the children. I was a therapist on his unit for several years and he taught me so much about working empathically and therapeutically. I spoke to him by phone a few years ago. He always believed in his staff and our common goal of healing. He always had a minute to spare for advice and was so caring and approachable. He always spoke of how much
he loved his own children and how proud he was of them. He will be missed.

A tragic loss to all who knew and loved Philip. The highlight of the Jewish Year was listening to Philip chant the High Holy Days services. He brought tears to my eyes, and carried me back to the years of listening to his father, of blessed memory. He may be gone, but he will never be forgotten and his family ensures that their legacy will continue.
