Family-Placed Death Notice

JAMES F. CAMPBELL James F. Campbell, 94, of Atlanta died on February 28, 2005 at Hospice Atlanta surrounded by his family. "Jimmy" Campbell was a third generation Atlantan, growing up in the historic West End neighborhood. He was the son of Patrick and Mary Agnes Campbell and was the last surviving sibling of seven children. Jimmy Campbell served as an altar boy at the first mass at St. Anthony of Padua in West End. He graduated from the Marist College (now Marist High School) in 1929 and was reported to be the oldest living alumni. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Europe. He was employed for 35 years with the Atlanta-Dinkler Plaza Hotel where he was much loved by staff and the hotel's many loyal guests. After the closure of the Dinkler Hotel, he became a probation officer with the State of Georgia. He will be greatly missed by his large family. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marie Creel Campbell and his children and their spouses, Mary Campbell Anderson of Macon, Georgia; James M. Campbell and Karen Campbell of Winter Park, Florida, Gail Campbell Hayes and John Hayes of Atlanta, Georgia, and Christine Campbell Kalski and Larry Kalski of Atlanta, Georgia. He is survived by seven grandchildren: Mark Anderson of Macon, Georgia; Matthew Campbell of Winter Park, Florida; Laura Anderson Graham of Smyrna, Georgia; Lise Campbell Davis of Winter Park, Florida; Sarah Campbell Hayes of Washington, D.C.; Lauren Campbell of Charleston, Florida; and Katie Cash Hayes of Washington, D.C.; and a great grandchild, Robert Michael Graham of Smyrna, Georgia. He is also survived by three nephews and their spouses, John Patrick Campbell of Atlanta, Georgia; Robert A. Scott and Colette Scott of Birmingham, Alabama; Charles H. Campbell and Ann Campbell of Atlanta, Georgia. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening, March 2nd, from 6 pm until 8pm at Patterson Oglethorpe Hill Chapel, 4550 Peachtree Road, NE, Atlanta. A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, March 3rd at 10:00 am at The Cathedral of Christ the King, 2699 Peachtree Road, Atlanta. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested donations be made to Hospice Atlanta (hospice-atlanta.org) and Our Lady of Perpetual Help (olphhome.org). Arrangements by H. M. As a former West Ender myself, and having shared a carpool to Lockheed with James' brother Bill, I was interested to see that James had worked at the Dinkler Plaza during the time my father, Lee Fowler, worked in the barber shop there. God bless his children and grandchildren!
