Family-Placed Death Notice
Staff Sgt. Travon Johnson of the U.S. Army, was killed in Iraq on Monday, July 23, 2007. Travon is the son of Mrs. Billie Shotlow of Ontario, California and Mr. Richard D. Johnson of Ellenwood, County Line Community, who presently resides in Decatur, GA. Travon leaves to cherish his memory, wife, Sara; one sister, Kathy Vines; and one brother, Jeremy Ates; paternal grandmother Mrs. Annie Johnson-Sinkfield (James); and several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Forest Lawn Morticians, 6300 Forest Lawn Dr., Los Angeles, CA. 1-800-204-3131. Services are scheduled for Saturday, August 4, 2007 at 12:30 p.m. The family will host friends and visitors on Wednesday, August 1, 2007 at 2038 Marco Dr., Decatur, GA, 30032 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Please call 404-403-2497 for further information. My heart goes out to the family and friends of T.J. I was deeply sadden upon hearing the news in the local paper on his first anniversary. Lost contact after so many years, not knowing how to communicate or where to find his family and express my condolences. I remember that dynamite smile, positive and energetic boy on the football team and student at Grace Yokley Middle School in Ontario. Thank You T.J. for giving us inspiration and the privilege to be your coach/teacher in my first year of teaching. You have touched the hearts of many lives. May you rest in peace and never be forgotten, I know I never will.

I never had the opportunity to meet Travon, but I did read his story through Legacy.com. I am deeply sorry for untimely death. I appreciate all that he gave up for all of our daily freedoms. I hope that his memory lives on forever. I am truly grateful for his service.

Travon... I dont even know what to say brother. I just heard the news, and it hit me hard. We hadnt spoke since we were stationed together in Alaska, and for that i am sorry. You will always be my friend, and will always be in my heart. You were a Soldier, who trained and fought with passion, because thats what you loved to do. You are a hero brother. Your kindness and smile is what attracted me to you when I met first met you in 1997. I knew you as TJ and you made me laugh and had a heart of love. He was a good soldier and wanted to be the best he could be and he worked hard at this mission. My husband and I grew to care for him. He was a good person and a great friend. We miss him very much. I had the honor of meeting Travon, J for his friends...all I can say is that God have the best and most precious angel now, and that he left such a big emptiness behind cause his heart was amazing like everything about him...im sure he'll stay close to his soldiers he loved so much and his family and friends he couldn't live without. I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
