Memories and Condolences

John was the most original thinker it has been my privilege to know in my professional career. I know that Eleanor, Lynn, and Darrin have the most incredible memories with which to wrap themselves with John's love now and forever. (I just found out that John was gone, thus the delay in this message.) Kathleen Bergin, former colleague in science education

Though I didn't know John Finley well, his son Darrin, was my best friend at Woodward Academy. Lynn, though older than Darrin and I, was always sweet to the 'new kid' (me) just like Darrin. Knowing Darrin and Lynn with all their compassion, caring, loving, positive dispositions it's not surprising they came from two such amazing parents! I know this from experience after losing my Mother years ago...John is in good hands! Good people don't just happen...good people raise good children, grandchildren, touch lives...even when they don't know the difference they've made for others.

The Big Guy has one more person to help us find our way in life!

Warm regards, David Gregory

Dr. Finley had his office next to mine at Mercer University. We became good friends and he stopped in often to share tales about his grandchildren and make me smile with his dry humor. He loved nature and his family. He was a humble and quiet man of strength with a deep love of science. He will be greatly missed by his colleagues and students at the university! My thoughts and deepest prayers are with his family at this difficult time.

"Doc" Finley and I were classmates in the Westfield High School Class of 1960. In high school, he was one of the smart ones but with a relatively quiet personality. I was always impressed at our reunions by his calm and classy demeanor. He will be missed by the Class of 1960.

It was a pleasure to know and work with John. Like countless others, I learned so much about kindness, civility, and education from conversations and interactions with him. Dr. Finley's influence will live on in the many minds he inspired and the many hearts he touched. To his family, I send love and sincere condolences.

To the Finley Family,
Doc. Finley was indeed an inspiration to me as he started his teaching career in rural Livingston, Alabama during the 1960s. I often thought of his words of encouragement as I studied to reach my goals. The world is a better place because of his legacy. My deepest sympathy goes to all who loved him dearly.
Peace.

"Doc" Finley as we so fondly called him was a wonderful and kind kid that grew up with us in a small steel town called "Westfield,Al". We went to the same neighborhood schools and graduated from Westfield High. Our neighborhood was from the 'old school' type where everyone knew everyone elses kids and families. He was always smart and very gentlemanly toward everyone. To the family we send prayers and Blessings and much love.

Those of us who worked with Dr. John Finley at Mercer University will remember him for his exceptional wisdom, his innate and authentic kindness, his gentleness and his gentlemanliness, his insightful intelligence, his wonderful sense of humor and irony, his love of nature (especially for birds and trees), his inquiring mind, his quietly reflective spirit, and his genuine passion for excellence in science education. Our lives and the lives of our Mercer students have been greaty enriched and blessed by his presence on our Tift College of Education faculty. He will be deeply missed as a very dear friend and as a highly valued colleague.

He was an inspiring and wonderful professor. Dr. Finley's encouragement meant so much to me. He will be missed but his students and colleagues will always have a piece of him within us. God bless his family.
