discovered vic's music when I was 17 in the mid-90's. it's meant so much to me over the years. since xmas 2009, every few months I remember: oh yeah, vic chesnutt died. he was the real deal. i'll always (re)turn to his music for solace and wonder.

I don't know recall exactly how I stumbled across Vic, but it was (I think) because I had long been a fan of the band Cracker and I knew David Lowery and Vic were buds, and that was good enough for me. Simply put, Vic was a legend and when I learned of his death some three months after his passing I truly felt as though I had lost a friend. Bob Dylan is an icon to the world, and Vic was just as iconic to me. My top dozen songs of his (loosely) are Threads, Wrong Piano, Square Room, I'm Through, Everybody Can Change, Withering, Marathon, Forthright, Speed Racer, Styrofoam, Woodrow Wilson and Supernatural. I only "knew" him for maybe five years before he left us but God, I miss Vic.

I discovered you posthumously, when Thee Siver Mt. Zion came performing in Rome in 2010 and dedicated the concert to you. I started listening to 'A the cut', and I never stopped. I love your intense lyrics, your touching melodies and your way to be so humble and true even if you are simply GLORIOUS. Now I know all your discography and I spread your dreamy music amongst my friends. I decided to write my thesis at the university on the US (not) care/health system, cause i got impressed by your story, and even if I am one of no importance I'll dedicate it to you.
Play on, I'm still listening...
Un abbraccio forte a te e alla tua famiglia

May the God of comfort and tender mercies continue to comfort your family and friends, and may you find comfort in the words found in the Holy Scriptures: "And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away."" Please accept my sincere condolences during this time of your loss.

For Vic...
WEEP NOT FOR ME
Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.
Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.
I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.
Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.
Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.
Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

It's nearly March and I still can't shake the loss. Where are the words? I'm afraid Vic already used them all. Perhaps there's little left to say.

Vic was a capable visual artist, too. I remember a concert early in his career which he introduced his songs with paintings he had done. His interview with Terri Cross on NPR was as honest and entertaining picture of Vic's life as you could get. A beacon poet for the times.

I was just getting into Vic's music. I first heard him on the album of Daniel Johnston covers..... A couple of months ago, I was in NYC and saw the REM tribute show at Carnegie Hall. Despite all the big names there, Vic's rendition of "Everybody Hurts" was definitely the highlight of the show. I had JUST listened to the Terry Gross interview the night before I heard of his death....
He was so open and honest in that interview....
He will be missed

1990 in bed with chickenpox fever in san francisco, i played "little" on casette continuously after reading about you in Option magazine. I sweat it out on your simple, brutal, haunting words about a girl found dead in a frozen duck pond and bike ramps in the backyard. Like everybody else it turns out, i felt like you were reading aloud a personal letter to me. Then West of Rome till i drove everybody crazy..
When i made the trip to athens to hopefully hang with you, all i could do is tell lame drunken jokes and let Deanna tease me about my love for you. I decided to just leave you be. Patrik Keim(RIP) was so sweet to buy me the Speedracer movie to watch at the university library while i was living in my van on pulaski st. that scorching summer. Every few weeks i'd see you cruising by on the sidewalk with friends wearing some idiosyncratic hat and wonder where a poet likes to spend his evening out.
What satisfied me most though, was driving by your place once in awhile and seeing your van parked in front with those words "Sophisticated" painted on the side. It verified for me the fact that you had the guts to let the world know just who the heck you are. It's something that metaphors and achy music can also accomplish for those who wish to listen, but not at a stop light, out on the road and in your face for all the roughnecks to judge.
It takes a lifetime for anybody to figure out who they really are and maybe i'm guessing in the end it wasn't about what life was lacking, but instead that you had indeed lived it completely and to your best and finally, you were ready.
This world, though, feels like something less now and those "little" things that ultimately aren't little at all have lost a loving, respectful voice.
Love forever,
Flavio (Sam) Flaviani

My condolences to Vic's family, friends, and fellow fans. I've followed Vic's efforts since 1993, when I discovered "Supernatural." Since that time I've anxiously awaited each new tour and album. The world has become a less interesting place without Vic and I am deeply saddened by our loss.

My condolences go out to Vic's loved ones. I have long been a fan of Vic's music, his songwriting was so heartfelt, creative and honest. As a person I found him to be inspiring, just because he tried so hard to not be an inspiration. He just wanted to be treated like everyone else. As a fellow wheelchair user, I saw him as somewhat of a kindred spirit. Seeing him on the stage made me feel like there was more in this world that I was capable of. I wish I had the chance to see him on stage and person and to meet him. Maybe someday. RIP Vic Chesnutt. I'll see you around.

Vic, your music attacked pain and joy and their ironic shared spaces with equally blistering accuracy.
Hope you get some answer as to why there were so many thunderbolts to dodge. Your strength and humor and honesty are a model of how being humanly beautiful can face off the difficulties of being human. You helped me tackle my own questions about wanting fairness and justice when it seems elusive, about finding meaning in my own dark times.
To be as honest and brave as you, to learn from who you were, to write with as much frenzy and fury and fearless candor. To be surprised by brightness despite expectations.
Peace to you and your family. Thank you to your wife and friends and extended family for taking care of you for us. You are very much missed.

I am saddened by the news I received today. I have had difficulty making sense of this. I think of Vic and it brings back such fond memories of Athens in the 80's. The late summer nights at the Grit. Java for some quick banter and a smoke. Those days seemed so easy and carefree.

Vic, there was always Vic, part clown, part besotted genius, he was a poet all the way through, fully an artist and an influence on the life and music of Athens for a very, very long time. He was so great, so much there in his music.
All sympathies to his loves and family. He will be missed and his inspiration will always be here.

Long ago--back in our days on Meigs St.--I remember you sitting well into the night, under the streetlamp, pondering the bats that flew into my attic and often the bottom of a bottle. I would wake at 3 AM to the sound of you and the Dashboard Saviours trying to harmonize on hymns on the front porch, after way too much libation, so it took LITTLE to convince me that you actually were a genius. I believed it from that moment on. Happy Trails, Vic. I know that your heart feels as if it can't be mended, Tina.

I feel so privileged to have had the opportunity to see Vic perform several times and to have had the wonderful experience of getting to meet and spend time with him years ago. His charm, dry (naughty) wit, and soulfulness were beautifully reflected in his music.

Vic gave the rest of us so much despite all of his own difficulties, which makes him one of the most generous of the talented artists we have known. In his art he was bold enough to dig deep into life, courageously turning over rocks we might prefer to ignore. One balm for those of us who are left behind is that Vic was so prolific and productive; he's left much for us to listen to and digest. But it's hard to imagine our city and music scene without Vic Chesnutt. And he was one of our major ambassadors to the world. Rest in peace Vic.

Vic may you found the peace and solitude that you have so long been searching for. Your music has made an impression on my life and I am certain so many others. I was happy to meet you several times when you brought your music to the west coast. My fondest memory of you was the look on your face when I told you I saw your show earlier in the week in San Francisco & decided to travel to McCabe’s in Santa Monica to catch your show again. You were genuinely moved that a fan would travel almost 500 miles to see you. I would travel the world to catch just one more glimpse of your genius. I love you Vic and I will see you on the other side.

Vic's music will certainly be missed -- it's difficult to think of a recording more moving than West of Rome, with all its haunting imagery and expressive turns of phrase.

I first heard about Vic in 1995 after the release of his famous album "Is the Actor Happy?". Over the years Vic stayed one of my favorite songwriters and each new release of him was like a personal letter from a close friend. I still can't get enough of his unique and wonderful voice.
A few years ago, as i was dating my wife, i sent her a mix of Vic's music. Not only did she enjoy the songs but she went to see him live and got Vic to dedicace the mix for me (and she also met Tina!)
The other night, we were listening to "Skitter on Take-Off", just before the news about Vic's coma came out. I told her i was amazed about how many records Vic released lately and she said "maybe he feels like he's gonna die soon and still has a lot to say."
He left many sad Peter Pans...

I had the pleasure of meeting Vic through mutual Athens music friends in 1993, and also got to watch him at work @ Full Moon Studios in Watkinsville. His creativity and artistry amazed me then, and amaze me to this day.
I got to know Vic a little better over the years, and saw him many times while visiting Athens from Atlanta. Although he was small in stature, the effect he had upon entering a room was like a hurricane making landfall. Hopefully the tragic aspect of his passing will not diminish the wonderful body of work he left for us.
My thoughts and prayers go out to his family, and especially to Tina.

I've listened to you for just about two decades now. Your music is a part of me. And because you were so fully YOU in your music, so raw and uncompromisingly honest, you became a part of me, though I didn't know you, only stuck around after shows sometimes to say "Thank you" and run away feeling weird. And I have been crying for the past two days like I lost my brother. I'm sorry it got so bad. I've been avoiding listening to your music since I heard the news because it makes me too sad, but the radio in my head is playing it anyway, nonstop. Thank you for everything. Love and peace to your family.

So sad to hear of the hardships that filled Victor's life. I knew him as Victor. My dad and Vic's paternal grandmother were first cousins. I remember when Vic was adopted and how proud the Chestnutt's were of their baby boy. When Vic was one year old, his grandmother asked me to take a trip with her and Vic to Alabama-I was 22 years old then. Vic was just such a precious baby. I never saw Victor after that trip-his family relocated to Georgia.
I am now in Athens and tried to find Victor-however I suppose I didn't try hard enough. Yes,he was his paternal Grandmother's heart beat as were her sons. She was a very dear, dear lady. I know that Vic and his grandmother-Cousin Sophie are in Heaven-reunited at last! I am sure throughout his life; even after her passing-she was a great comfort to him as memories are what keep folks going at times.
May God Bless the Chestnutt's in their time of sorrow-the pain is gone for Vic but the hole he leaves in the heart of so many will hurt for awhile. Sounds like he left some beautiful memories to many, many people. He truly was a blessing for his family and others.
Sweet Dreams Victor; and tell Cousin Sophie I love and miss her. She was one precious lady.

Gasp! I loved Vic Chesnut. I will continue to love his music, I think- the rest of my life. I hardly ever go see a show these days- but would almost always go to see Vic play at the 40 Watt. Loved his banter with his home crowd. We all felt like we were in the living room. I don't want that to stop- ever. It was just about impossible to get him out for an encore, as now, I guess the lights are on and it's time to go home. I don't want it to end. Last night when I was preparing food for my family's Christmas feast I popped in West of Rome and cut onions and cried my eyes out. After the onions were cut I just continued to cry. Oh Athens, I love you, but you hurt too much sometimes. All this tortured genius.. My sweetest thoughts of comfort to you that share the pain- especially you whose hearts will never be completely whole ever again.

I've been crying off and on all morning. Vic Chesnutt is my favorite song writer, and an amazing performer. I just saw him play in Seattle a month ago. Before the show I went outside to smoke and he was sitting in his chair, talking on the phone. There was a couple moments where I could have struck up a conversation with him, but I didn't ('cause i'm chicken), so we just kind of looked at each other in silence, and I finished my smoke, and went back in. I regret being a chicken now.
I love you, Vic. I am so sorry for his wife Tina, his other family, his close friends, and all the thousands of fans.

I am so grateful to have had vic's music in my life. I hope now he can find the peace he so deserves. I will never stop
listening to him or sharing his music with friends. My thoughts are with his family and those grieving his loss.

Vic was a brave, courageous and talented soul. May his music live on and be continued inspiration to many. Although nothing can truly ease the pain except perhaps through time, may blessings, prayers and support go out to his family and friends for a healing and peaceful and New Year.
