Jerome Saleeby Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

SALEEBY, Jerome JEROME ELIAS SALEEBY Jerome Elias Saleeby, tireless community organizer and activist, made his transition after a struggle with cancer on April 23, 2010 in Atlanta, GA. He was 50 years young. Eli dedicated his life to the fight for equal rights for Georgia's gay lesbian, bisexual and transgendered citizens. He was the first from Atlanta to serve on the Human Rights Campaign Board of Directors. He was also on HRC's Board of Governors, Atlanta HRC Dinner committee Co-Chair and was a founding member of Georgia Equality. Through his leadership as a Board Member with the Elton John AIDS Foundation, Eli worked for increased funds for services and education around HIV/AIDS and was also Co-Chair of Heart Strings, a national tour. A long respected Real Estate Agent, Eli was known throughout the real estate community as a principled professional, and worked to provide mentorship, training and policy development for those in the field. Throughout his life, Eli was a dedicated Religious Scientist and helped lead others to the teaching. His training through the Atlanta Church of Religious Science (now the Spiritual Living Center of Atlanta) was a balm for his soul and reflected his passion for the interconnected nature of all life. He is survived by his father, Elias Saleeby of Raleigh, NC, his brother, James Menefee of Richmond, VA and countless friends and colleagues around the world. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his honor to the Elton John AIDS Foundation are suggested. Memorial services are being held in Atlanta, Wilson, Raleigh and New York.

Eli,
You were always such a great guy. You lit up the room with your sweet smile. You always made me feel special. It was great to play water volley ball with you and your New Years Eve parties were so much fun.
I will truly miss you Eli!

Eli...you were one of the first people I met when I moved to Atlanta. Your kindness and your sense of humor help me transition from the conservative community that I moved from to this fast-paced city that is Atlanta. You always had a smile and a joke. And although we hadn't seen each other in the past few years, I would always smile when I'd hear your name. I will truly miss you, Eli. Wherever you are now, those around you are smiling and laughing!

I am sickened by this loss. Jerry was so special to me beginning at age 9. He and his mom meant so much to me and my mother. I loved him dearly all through school and after losing touch for a while I was so happy to re- connect. I am so saddened with this loss but have many heart felt special memories of us together. Love you Jerry!!!!

I have no words... I am shocked... I just spoke with you and you were okay. You and me against the world every since the 3rd grade. I love you and I will always love. Rest well my beloved friend. I am happy we got to go to our last class reunion together. To spend Thanksgiving 2009 together with my mother and your dad. For you being there when my brother passed away June 2009, and for keeping me sane with our once a month mexico night outs in Wilson, NC Bootsie Thank you for getting in contact with me. I have tried to call Jim B. (Message box is full). I did speak with Teresa who is taking care of Jerry's dad, them to Jim his brother, then I called Elton's Manager and Publiicist so they could pass on a message to him.

Jerry you will always have a special place in my heart. Until we meet again
All my love,

Cynthia Ellis
