Family-Placed Death Notice

DR. LOY LEO STRAWN, Jr. Dr. Loy Leo Strawn, Jr, 77, died Saturday, August 05, 2006. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday at Vineville United Methodist Church. Burial will be private. Rev. Alan Fennell and Rev. Joseph B. Duke, III will officiate. The family will greet friends from 6 until 8 PM Sunday at Snow's Memorial Chapel, Cherry Street and asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made to Vineville United Methodist Church, 2045 Vineville Avenue, Macon 31204 or to the charity of the donor's choice. Dr. Strawn was a native of McDonough, Georgia, and was the son of the late Loy Leo, Sr. and Una Raulerson Strawn. He was a graduate of Emory at Oxford Academy and Emory at Oxford Junior College, and received his BS degree from Emory University where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. After graduation, Dr. Strawn served in the United States Army before entering dental school in 1953. He graduated from Emory University School of Dentistry and was a member and past president of Psi Omega dental social fraternity, and was elected to Omicron Kappa Upsilon dental honor society. After graduation from dental school, Dr. Strawn established his practice in Macon. He was a member and former president of the Bibb County Dental Association, a member and former secretary and president of the Georgia Dental Association, a member of and Georgia delegate to the American Dental Association, a fellow of the International College of Dentists, and a fellow of the American College of Dentists. He was a charter member and past president of the Georgia Academy of Dental Practice. He was recipient of the Dentist of the Year Award from the Central District Dental Association, and he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Emory Dental Alumni Association in 2002. Dr. Strawn was also a member of the Fifth District Dental Society of Atlanta. He served in many capacities with the Thomas P. Hinman Dental Meeting and was General Chairman of the Hinman meeting in 1981. He received the coveted Gold Card Award from the Hinman Dental Society in January, 2001. Dr. Strawn was a member of Vineville United Methodist Church and had served on the Administrative Board of the Church. He was a supporter of Boy Scouts of America and former president of Vine-Ingle Little League. Dr. Strawn served on the Board of Governors of Stratford Academy for 12 years and served as Chairman of the Board from 1973 until 1975. He was a member of Idle Hour Golf and Country Club, having served on the Board of Directors. Dr. Strawn was preceded in death by his brothers, David Franklin Strawn and Robert Arthur Strawn. He is survived by his wife, Claire Amis Strawn of Macon; son, Dr. L. Daniel Strawn and his wife, Connie of Macon; daughters, Holly Strawn Riley and her husband, John of McDonough, Alice Strawn Sheridan and her husband, Tino of Macon; five grandchildren, Elizabeth Strawn, Laura Lee Strawn, Daniel Strawn, Val Sheridan and Loy Sheridan; several nieces and nephews.
