Melvin Crain Obituary

Crain, Melvin Horace
passed away on October 24, 2011. He was born on March 23, 1925 in Elk City, Oklahoma and was raised in Phoenix. He graduated from North High School in 1944, and earned a BS from Arizona State College in 1950 and an MA in Education from Arizona State University in 1972. He married the late Ann Marcella Leahy in 1958. Mel enlisted in the US Army Air Corps in 1944 and retired from the US Air Force in 1969 as a Major with Command Pilot wings. Following the Air Force, he taught high school at Phoenix's Maryvale High School. Mel is survived by his four children and four grandchildren: Richard Crain of Payson and Saudi Arabia; Robert Crain of Las Vegas, NV; Barbara Crain and Tom McCarthy and their daughters Maire and Emma of San Francisco, CA; and Betty Crain and Jon Breckenridge and their sons Ethan and Grant of Brooklyn, NY. The family requests that memorial contributions be made in memory of Melvin Crain to the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College General Scholarship Fund at the ASU Foundation, P.O. Box 2260, Tempe AZ 85280-2260. A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 29th at 11:30am at the Messinger Payson Funeral Home, 901 S. Westerly Road, Payson, Arizona.
