Louis Grubb Obituary

Louis Stephen Grubb Lou Grubb, Phoenix automotive business icon whose "Take Five" radio and TV commercials played on Arizona stations for decades, died Jan. 24, after suffering a cranial bleed, 26 years after he recovered from an aneurysm that drew so much attention that local TV reporters did daily condition reports. He was a month short of his 90th birthday. Lou was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was a man of deep faith and commitment, a lifelong Catholic. Lou, who came to Arizona in 1945 from his parents' home in Long Island, founded Grubb Automotive in 1972, developing the company into a conglomerate of Chevrolet, Ford, Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai, Buick, Mazda, Suzuki and Saturn dealerships. He sold the company to AutoNation in 1997, remaining with the company as a legacy dealer. He was such a popular figure that the Arizona Republican Party tried to recruit him in 1977 as a candidate for governor. He wasn't interested. He preferred to focus his attention on his family, his business, and community involvement with Barrow Neurological Institute and St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center. The Lou Grubb Friends Fore Golf event will celebrate its 39th annual year this April and has netted more than $5 million for the institutions. Lou and Evelyn (Fountaine), his wife of nearly 61 years, have also benefitted many worthwhile organizations through the Arizona Community Foundation. They also have been dedicated members of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church; among their exciting experiences together were meeting the Pope twice--once in Rome and once in Phoenix. But before he retired in 2004, Lou had earned a reputation for his soft-spoken, homey commercials that were anything but hard-sell. "A good business deal has to be fair to all parties, or the process fails," he once said. "In the long run, it is in the best interests of a business to ensure that a transaction is fair to the customer, the manufacturer, the worker and the owner." Jon Talton, then a columnist for "The Arizona Republic, said Lou was renowned for his ads: "If you grew up in 1960s Phoenix, you can't forget the soothing TV sales pitch of the real Lou Grubb. He was among the legends of local car dealer media celebs." In a biography of Lou published in 1998, syndicated columnist Paul Harvey, who was a friend, wrote that Lou came to Arizona and "made the most of his newfound wellness, his innate competitive spirit and his Golden Rule business philosophy to build varied automotive enterprises across the Southwest." Orien Fifer, a "Phoenix Gazette: columnist writing after Lou purchased Rudolph Chevrolet in 1972, agreed: "Lou's success story is in direct refutation of the Leo Durocher theory that nice guys finish last." When Lou came to Phoenix as a young man by train from the east, he had $27 in his pocket and all his possessions in one suitcase. Plagued by chronic respiratory problems, he was headed to Tucson for a healthier climate at his doctor's advice when his train stopped in Phoenix, and he spied a billboard that said, "For your stay in Phoenix, stop at the Westward Ho," a popular downtown hotel. He checked in and convinced them to hire him as a night clerk. Having loved golf since he was a teen, he moved on to take a job as a caddy master at the Phoenix Country Club, a job he loved because of his passion for golf. (Lou's passion lasted a lifetime; he collected golf memorabilia, donating much of it to good causes) In his new job, he attracted the attention of one of the Club members, Read Mullan, who owned a Ford dealership. Mullan hired Lou as a junior salesman in 1949, starting a career in the automotive business that spanned decades. In 1972, Lou's son, Dan, entered the family business and remains the head of AzCal II, LLC, an automotive company with business in Arizona and California. Lou is survived by his wife, Evelyn, and four children, John; Nancy Sage (husband, Dennis); Dan (wife, Kathy); Tracy Christ (husband, Wil) and nine grandchildren--John's children, Alex, Max and John Luke; Nancy's and Dennis' children, Lear Johnson and Hayden Sage; Dan's and Kathy's children, Colton and Kelsey, and Tracy's and Wil's children, Rebecca and John Matthew Christ. A man of true integrity, honesty and honor, Lou will be deeply missed by his family and friends. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, with a 7 p.m. Rosary, at Hansen Desert Hills Mortuary, 6500 E. Bell Road. A funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Francis Xavier Church, 4715 N. Central Avenue, Phoenix. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Lou Grubb Friends Fore Golf (www.supportbarrow.org), designating either the Barrow Neurological Foundation or St. Joseph's Medical Center as the recipient.

Not sure what to say?

When John and I got caught doing something Mr. Grubb didn´t approve of, he had his say about the problem always in the soft tone. No anger, no raised voice but certainly that look of disapproval on his face. I always felt a lesson was in there somewhere.
Today: Little late,I know but when looking to see if John was still around. Mr, Grubbs obit came up. I knew him from being Johns friend. The different obits were spot on about his life and character. Dan And Nancy were were just experiencing high school life. She giggled a lot.
Of course I´ve always thought of Lou, if even for a moment, when forever the song Take Five comes on. That´s a good thing!

I bought my first used car from Lou Grubb back in 1975 ( a 1970 Chevy Impala), right out of high school (Central High School) in Phoenix, and attended same school with his son, Dan. Lou was an icon here in Phoenix for decades and will be fondly remembered by thousands of Phoenix residents.

I came to Phoenix in 1962 as a 20 year-old kid from Iowa, and I fondly remember those gentle, Rudolf Chevrolet commercials voiced by Lou on my morning commute to Motorola's Scottsdale military division. He was like a Dad talking to his children on how to be good people...and buying a Chevrolet of course!

My folk knew Lou when he worked at the Westward Ho, and my mother was a housekeeper there (a LONG time ago!). He'd sometime read the homilies at our church (Most Holy Trinity), and I was thrilled that a Real Celebrity came to our church! It's been a long time since I lived in Phoenix, but Lou was a good part of it.

Please accept my condolences. I will always remember his integrity, his upright character, his determination to try to do the right thing by his family, even the more challenging relatives! I knew this day would come, of course, and I feel a much deeper sadness at his passing than at the others'. You have much to be proud of, and thankful for. I'm sure he was far from perfect, but in him I had a glimpse of what a father was supposed to be. I'm happy you had that guidance back then and now, many memories to sustain you. Aleta

I grew up in Phoenix. I remember watching Mr. Grubb on T.V. commercials with his gentle demeanor and the beautiful signature song in the background, to which I can still hear to this day, as he delivered his messages about the vehicles he had for sale at his Lou Grubb Cheverolet Dealership on the corner of Camelback Road and 27th Avenue. I was only a child and a teenager during the time I watched his ads. I remember hearing that he had a patent on the style of his advertisement delivery, which, in itself, was a lasting impression upon me because he seemed to be a gentle man who became very successful selling vehicles in his unique and calming manner. As I was watching T.V. in my home this week, a regional car dealership ad was aired. I thought to myself, "I wonder if anyone still delivers vehicle advertisements the way Lou Grubb did?", thus the reason why I was thinking about Mr. Grubb just this very week. I did not learn of his passing until a few moments ago. I felt compelled and led to write a message to his family to let you know how he impacted a life whom he never knew, nor had I ever met in person. My husband and I own a Chevrolet to this day. I was saddended to learn of his passing. I know he will be missed by his family, friends and all of his customers. He was a special and gifted man. May God's comfort sustain you, his family, in this most difficult time. ~ Cindy W., Las Cruces, NM.

We moved to Phoenix in 1966, and were immediately impressed with Lou's radio ads. Over the next four decades, we did business with Rudolph/Lou Grubb Chevrolet numerous times and were always amazed at the high level of integrity and the respect with which he treated his customers and employees. There are far too few people like Lou in this world, and he will be missed by those who knew him, as well as those who never met him.

To the family of Lou Grubb...my condolences. I am a Phoenix native and grew up watching the Lou Grubb commercials which I have to say were unique and uncompromising. I want to pass on my condolence to the Grubb family. I had the honor of working for Lou Grubb for a number of years.
Lou was a mentor in my life. He was bigger than life to me. He taught us the correct way to build relationships with our customers and our colleagues in his dealership through his actions and his words. Some people speak these words but Lou lived them.
While most people would back away when you mentioned you were in the car business we could proudly say we worked for Lou Grubb and everyone respected us because they knew the way Lou did business.
Thank you for sharing Lou with us. Lou's way of doing business and his principals will continue to live on in me.
With deepest sympathy for your loss,

I first met Lou Grubb in 1974, when he entrusted me to install a sound and video system in the new home he was building.
In the 38 years that I was privileged to know him, he was a good client, a mentor, a roll model and a good friend.
When I think of Lou, many words come to mind - integrity, honesty, high moral character, generous, soft spoken, gentleman, one of a kind!
I had the utmost respect, admiration and love for Lou Grubb.
My prayers and condolences go out to Evie and the entire Grubb family. We will all miss him sorely, but have a life time of fond memories to cherish.

Manfred Susunkewa & Family

January 28, 2012

My dad purchased a 1985 Chevy Mini Blazer for his daughters when they went off to college. The truck has managed many miles across the Arizona,New Mexico region. She was a dependable vehicle for not only us, but the entire family. Sadly, the Chevy has been out of commission and now sits in the garage. It has not been used in awhile but still runs. The Blazer still has its original Lou Grubb Chevorlet metal plate attached on the truck gate til this day. Upon hearing Grubb's passing this week, the Susunkewa family has a part of Americana of the legacy he had built. We would like to thank Lou Grubb for the memories.

I first met Lou and Evelyn Grubb in 1974. Both just lovely and extremely nice people. They were down to earth and you felt like you knew them for many years.
I had the great pleasure of going out to lunch with Lou many times. I always remember his sweet tooth and yet restraint. Often he would order a piece of cake, ask the server to charge him the full price, but to only bring him a half piece of cake!
Years later when my daughter had a problem with another car dealer she had bought a car from, to make matters easier I called Lou and told him what had happened. He said let me make a call for you. A few hours later, I got a call from the other car dealers General Manager apologizing for what had happened and making things right for my daughter. That's the kind of guy Lou was. A friend, a person who you could turn to, easy to talk to.
The world has lost a really fine person.
I am sure he will be fondly remembered and missed by his family, friends and all those who had the pleasure to know him personally.

My first job after graduation from ASU was to go to work for Lou Grubb. In retrospect that was one of the most important decisions of my life. Lou became not only my boss but also a needed mentor for a young man about to take his first steps in the business world. The moral values and work ethic that Lou Grubb exemplified to me during my three years at Rudolph Chevrolet have influenced my entire life. There is no doubt but that his warm personal smile and gracious way of dealing with people will forever be cherished by those who knew him.

I cherish the years I worked for Mr. Grubb at the Ford store in Scottsdale. Lou was not only the best employer in my working years, but a dear friend and true gentleman. He will be missed by all but his legacy will live on.
