Joaquin Azparren Obituary

Joaquin Azparren
June 20, 1929 - April 26, 2018

Joaquin Azparren was born in Viscarret, Navarra, Spain on June 20, 1929 to Remigio Azparren and Josefa Garde. After a four month battle well fought, he succumbed and died peacefully surrounded by his saddened family on April 26, 2018.

He arrived from Spain on Christmas Day in 1952 to work for his uncle Jose Azparren and Jake Martin tending sheep. He wanted the "good life" that the United States could offer him with hard work on his part and he attained his dream. In 1965, he and first cousin Pete established the Zalba & Azparren Sheep Co. He loved and excelled working with all livestock. He has many fond memories of summers in Carrizo Plains and ranches in Bitterwater Valley.

He was an honorary life member of the Kern County Basque Club and a member of the Wool Growers Association. He was a much sought after dance partner, could carry a tune, and had a sharp wit. His delight in life was his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

After his retirement in 2002, he enjoyed playing "mus", spending time with the grandchildren, tending to his garden especially his tomatoes, and travelling back to Spain. He was passionate about his Thursday "mus" appointments (and Sundays at Noriega's). He loved making a whole day out of it and nothing could interfere with his beloved Thursdays.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Hrmo.Francisco, wife Marichu, cousin Pete Zalba, and son-in-law Danny Maitia.

He leaves behind his children Mike Azparren, Carlos Azparren, Josefa Maitia, and Francisca Azparren-Douglas, son-in-law Don Douglas, and their mother, former spouse Patricia Azparren. His late wife's children Pete Urbelz (Jane), Mike, Jean, and Josephine Betbeder. His grandchildren Shane Geissel, Sara Azparren-Hicks (Brandon), Victoria Maitia, Amaya Azparren-Douglas, Lily and Aubrey Azparren; great-grandchildren Oliver and Theodore Hicks. In Spain, he is survived by his two older sisters Felisa and Hrma. Victorina and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend a huge thank you to his caregivers Marina and Virginia, and recently Teresa, for the companionship and love provided. Also, Hoffman Hospice for the guidance they provided in his final two weeks. In lieu of flowers you can make a donation in his name to the Kern County Basque Club Scholarship fund.

A Rosary and Mass of Resurrection officiated by Monsignor Craig Harrison will be May 3, 2018 at 9:30 at St. Francis Church.

Dear Azparren Family,
We are sorry to hear of the passing of your father. While his passing is sad, we hope you find comfort in knowing he will continue to live through you. You are his legacy. We know he loved each of you unconditionally. We have been watching
(from the sidelines) your family care honorably for him and for his late wife over the past few years. They must have been great parents to have earned such respect. We know he was proud of all of you! May peace be with you during this difficult time.
