Harold Hogan

1919 - 2016 Harold Hogan, the son of Oscar and Bennie Hogan, was born in Ponta, Texas, on December 28, 1919. He is preceded in death by his parents, his only sister Bennie Ruth Pearman, and his granddaughter Ashlye Patrick. Hogan-- as he was known to all who loved him-was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church of Newton for over 50 years where he taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, and served for years on the Board of Trustees. Hogan was a prominent member of his community serving as chairman of the Housing Authority of the City of Newton and as a member of the Lions Club for 33 years. He was recently awarded a Legacy Lion pin for his service. He was also a life member of the Newton Masonic Lodge for well over 50 years. Hogan served in the Naval Reserve from 1941-1945 and was working at Pearl Harbor when the bombs fell on December 7, 1941. After the war, he returned to Texas, graduated from Stephen F. Austin University, and moved to Newton where he taught school from 1949-1951. On May 25, 1951, he married Betty Titter Stansbury and moved to Port Neches where he worked as a clerk at Texaco-Port Arthur until he retired in December of 1982. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Betty Titter Hogan; his children: Vickye Patrick and husband Roger of Garland, Keith Hogan and wife Ann of Lumberton, and Renee Waters and husband Mike of Diboll; his grandchildren: Ryan Patrick and wife Kellie, Kristi Harwell, Lindsey Fowler and husband Steven, Chelsea Christmas and husband Jarrod, and Doug Waters; his step-grandchildren: Gannon Greer, Logan Greer and wife Emily, and Tucker Greer; his great-grandchildren: Canan Jones, Alexia Ferguson, Jack Harwell, Zeb Fowler, Zia Fowler, Zoe Fowler, and Alli Christmas; his nephews and nieces: Tommy Stansbury and wife Jenny, Mary Murray and husband Bill, Jen Maulden and husband Stan, Suzanne Stansbury and husband Walter Matejovic; and many other wonderful relatives and friends. Visitation will be held at Smith Funeral Home in Newton, from 5 PM until 8 PM on Saturday, October 29th. Funeral services will be held at First Methodist Church of Newton, on Sunday, October 30th, at 2 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Methodist Church of Newton or the Newton Cemetery.
