Leo Haas

Leo A. Haas, 75, of Mascoutah, Ill., born August 20, 1935, in Mascoutah, Ill., died Saturday, April 30, 2011, at Memorial Hospital in Belleville, Ill.

Leo retired from Valley Steel as a truck driver after 38 years; was a member of Teamsters Local 688; Holy Childhood Catholic Church in

Mascoutah; Mascoutah Moose Lodge 815 where he was past Governor; was past president and member of the MIA; former member of the Park Board and Leu Civic Center Board; was involved in numerous community projects, and served in the U.S. Air Force Reserves from 1958 to 1964.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian M., nee Kolb, Haas, whom he married in Mascoutah on June 6, 1957, and who died June 13, 2001; his parents, Erwin and Elvira, nee Huber, Haas; a brother, Eugene Haas; and two brothers-in-law, Jack Vavrinek and Wayne Cooper.

He is survived by three children, Steven (Angela) Haas, Sarah Haas, and Michael (fiance Michelle Richards) Haas, all of Mascoutah, Ill.; two grandchildren, Ginni Lynn (Paul) Bernard of Mascoutah, Ill., and Devin Michael Haas of Mascoutah, Ill.; three step-grandchildren, Hannah, Dylan, and Shane Richards of Mascoutah, Ill.; a step-great-grandson, Riley Stott of Mascoutah, Ill.; two sisters, RoseMary Cooper of Mascoutah, Ill., and Dorothy (Jim) Puhl of Bedford, Texas; a brother-in-law, George Kolb of Mascoutah, Ill.; a special friend, Rosie Altman of New Baden, Ill.; and nieces, nephews and numerous friends.

Memorials may be made to Siteman Cancer Research, Washington University, Campus Box 1204, 7425 Forsyth Blvd, St. Louis, Mo., 63105-2161. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting mollfuneralhome.com.

Visitation: Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 3, 2011, at the Moll Funeral Home, Mascoutah, Ill. A Moose Ritual will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

Funeral: A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 4, 2011, at Holy Childhood Catholic Church in Mascoutah, with Father Abraham Adejoh officiating. Burial will be in Holy Childhood Catholic Cemetery, Mascoutah, Ill.

Words can't express my thoughts right now. Leo was one of my favorite Valley Steel drivers. My father was a Valley driver also and now Leo joins my father in heaven. May God bless those whom he left behind until we all join him. Mike Aussieker, Valley Dispatcher.
