Robert Knapp Obituary
A Loving Man, Filled with Faith and Integrity Robert W. "Bob" Knapp went to his heavenly home Saturday, March 5th, at the age of 88. A man of faith and integrity, Bob loved the Lord, his country, wife, children, grands and greats. He was a "people person." He loved learning everyone's "story," and was a friend to all. Bob was born on Easter Sunday, April 16, 1922 in Mt. Vernon, Washington to Robert and Irene Knapp. As a young boy, he became a Ham Radio Operator and continued that hobby all his life. At age 18, he joined a National Guard Unit commanded by his father, and they were soon caught up in WWII. He taught Morse Code in Communications, and served in Intelligence & Reconnaissance, piloting an L5. He earned two Purple Hearts, Bronze Star, three Battle Stars (Kwajalein, Saipan, Leyte), Philippine Liberation Medal, and Good Conduct Medal. In 1950, he met the love of his life, Pat, and they married on April 7, 1951. They would have celebrated 60 years next month. As a civilian, Bob worked as an electrician, draftsman, and distribution engineer for Puget Sound Energy, and retired as Local Manager in Port Townsend. Bob was instrumental in organizing the first Geneva Volunteer Fire Dept. and served as Fire Chief. He was on the Seattle Board of Directors for Boy Scouts of America and was Scoutmaster in Bellevue. He was president of Port Townsend Chamber of Commerce and also served for two years as President of the Good Sam RV Chapter of Jefferson County. He and Pat were avid Rvers, and as full timers for 10 years, they visited all the states. He enjoyed exploring lighthouses, relaxing by a campfire, and had a passion for history, especially Lewis & Clark and the Oregon Trail. He was grateful for a wonderful church family, and anticipated morning coffee at the Fairway Cafe. Bob will be greatly missed by his wife, Pat; children, Randy (Mariann), Marty (Cheryl), Rob (Kelli), and Allison (Dick); grandchildren, Leah, Aaron, Brittany, Jared, Jacob, Marcus, Micah, Bryn, R.J., Meredith, and Tristan; great-grandchildren, Caleb, Aaron, D.K., Aidan, and Taylor; brother, Wayne H. (Carley) Knapp; and his nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Bob's Life will be held Saturday, March 12, 2011, at 11:00 AM, at Sonlight Community Church, Lynden. Memorial contributions made be made in Bob's memory to Sonlight Church, Wells for Africa Program, 8800 Bender Rd., Lynden, 98264, or Hospice House, 2806 Douglas Ave., Bellingham, WA 98225.
