Crosby Howe

BENNINGTON -- Crosby O. Howe, 89, a resident of East Road, died Friday, Nov. 23, 2006, following a brief illness.

Born in Jeffersonville, on Dec. 16, 1916, he was the son of the late Daniel C. and Ila (Melvin) Howe. He received his education in Bennington.

Mr. Howe married the former Mildred Lyons in Bennington in 1937. She died in 1977. He later married the former Pauline (Jewett) Carruth, who survives.

In earlier years Mr. Howe was employed on the farm of the late Ball Lyons on Park Street Extension. Later he worked for Harold Burgess as a carpenter. Mr. Howe established Howe Brothers Carpentry in 1949 together with his brother, Clyde Howe. In 1969 Mr. Howe, with his son, Arthur, continued in the carpentry business with their business, known as Crosby O. Howe and Son. Mr. Howe retired in the early 1980s.

Mr. Howe was a retired member of the Bennington Rural Fire Department. He enjoyed woodworking and gardening.

Survivors include his wife, Pauline Howe of Bennington; a daughter, Shirley Sausville of Bennington; a son, Arthur M. Howe of Bennington; a stepson, George Carruth of Hardwick; a daughter-in-law, Maryann Howe of Bennington; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren;two brothers, Clyde Howe of Bennington and James Howe Sr. of Shaftsbury; nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Howe was predeceased by a son, Raymond Howe, and four sisters, Etta Howe, Arlene Joseph, Alice Towslee and Lula Sweet.

The funeral will be held at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, Monday, Nov. 27, 2006, at 2 p.m.

Friends may call at the funeral gome Monday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service.

Burial will take place in the family lot in White Chapel Cemetery.
