My Father

I have so many memories of my Dad. As a child when I was sick, he and my Mom, BOTH awake half the night rubbing my back and reassuring me. He drove me to school! K through freshmen year, every morning, 7:30 am, in his work van. When he would come home at night I would jump to him from the steps, maybe four or five times in a row.... each time from a higher step. He always caught me! If you know me, mechanically inclined, I am, sports oriented, not so much. So, little league.... NO WAY! Boston Police Car Auction, NOW your talking. It wouldn't be unlike him to tow 2 or 3 cars home on one Saturday. Those trips it was just him and me. My job was to sit in the car he wanted, to make sure no one stole the stereo knobs etc. ( People did that to discourage others from bidding), then wait for the tow truck to hook it up. They usually didn't run but, he loved fixing them up with help from Salvie P. and my brother Hal. When we went on family vacations to Cape Cod he always included Nana Mae and Papa Bill who brought about 8 huge bags of luggage. He never said a word! Just smiled, and filled every spare inch of the car. Sunday dinners at our house on Turtle Pond Pkwy always included Nana Mae, Papa Bill, and often Papa Danny, sometimes Uncle Danny. Dinner was followed by a few games of rummy 500. He always thought of everything, and everyone. I remember him bringing flower to this little old woman who hemmed his pants...... just because she was alone. He was that kind and loving. In 1983 Dad built the house here in Centerville together with Harry Crafts, and Bill Fafara. My Job was to knock out the brick foundation and he let me do allot of the outside shingling. He worked very hard all his life. He never drank, never raised a hand to my mother and loved us all and we knew it! What more could anyone ask for in a father. I could go on and on. Although, there are no word to express the sadness I am feeling! I have no regrets! I have nothing left unsaid. Only love in my heart and wonderful memories of a sweet, funny, smart man, who taught me many things, always keeping me on my toes. I can say I know, truly know, unconditional love! Not many people can say that.

Forever grateful to you Dad!
Love, forever and a day!
Your son Bill

Papa,
I miss you so much. I was so lucky to live down the cape for those five years and see you nearly everyday, those memories I will never forget. You have shown me the love of not only a grandfather but a father as well. You were one of a kind Pup and I wish you could have stayed with us forever, but you will forever be in our hearts.

I will always remember the times when you would pick me up from the bus stop and when we would go for ice cream. I will miss our joking back and forth and most of all your laugh along with those beautiful blue eyes. I will miss our summer cookouts and just the times when you would stop by to say hello. Cape Cod will never feel the same to me now that your gone.

Papa, I will always strive to make you proud. You have taught us all so much and we were all so lucky to know such a wonderful man. I love you so much.

Love always,
Your little punk.

Papa,

I am having a hard time falling asleep tonight. I keep thinking about you and all the good times we had. Wishing you could live forever. I remember taking your freshly painted work truck out for a spin and side swiped someone pulling into a parking lot. I was so worried you would be mad at me and never trust me again. You looked at me and said "Chris, that's why they call it a work truck...as long as it works". We went inside...had some lunch and talked about life.

We always talked....I told you everything. I hope I can be as wonderful of a father and husband when the time comes...

ps. you had a the handshake of a NFL linebacker.

I love you Pup!

To the greatest grandfather a girl could have:

papa you taught me the true meaning of love and family. i never thought that you would ever leave us, i thought you would live forever. you gave the best advice and had an answer to everything. if i ever felt sick i new i could just call you and with in a few minutes you would tell me what was wrong with me and what i needed to do. ill never forget when i was little how you used to do bor a ho to us all,i would get so excited and laugh for hours while you did it! i loved watching you and nana show your love to one another, you always told her how beautiful she was, your marrige was truley like a love story. i hope i find such a wonderful, loving man like my grandmother has found. you had everything, a beautiful wife loving children and grandchildren that idolize you. everyone that i brought to your house you always made feel so special and right when they would leave they would tell me "i wish i had a papa like that" i was so lucky , you were the best. before you past me and you would dance together and you promised me another lesson after Christmas, i know someday we will dance in heaven papa. i love you so much and i miss you a lot.

Billy & Mrs. Hourihan:
Though I only met your dad once, those hours turned to days and those days to a week of many laughs, chats and stories which to this day when I look back and remember them still put a twinkle in my eye, a smile on my face and can even make my sides hurt from the laughter.
Most of all, he warmed my heart with his charm and wit and managed to become part of some of my favorite vacation memories.
There are no words to express how deeply sorry I am for your loss. Please know that we will keep you both as well as your entire family in our thoughts and prayers.

Theresa,Bill,Harold Jr,Debbie and Darlene. Amy and I are deeply saddened. We shall always remember Harold.
There was plenty of room for kidding among us. And Harold could easily make sure that comedy was part of the deal.
His work on our old house gets a "WOW" everytime others check out the Cape Cod cellar.
Thank you Harold. Thank you Theresa and Thank you Bill for all your help

I only knew Mr. Hourihan Sr. for a short time, but in that time, his quick-wtted sense of humor won me over quickly along with that sparkle in those beautiful blue eyes when he would tell me the story of how he met Mrs. Theresa Hourihan delivering ice, or when he would tell the stories of him and Debbie dancing.
It was a pleasure to see his face light up with joy when he would see his grandchildren visit, or when he was surrounded by his loving children. Seeing the pictures of him as a young professional dancer allowed me to see a little deeper into this man's full life...
He seemed to have touched many people's lives, including my own family's. I didn't know until recently that my family has been warm every winter for over 10 years because of him ;-)
My heart aches for his family's loss... My love is with you all.
Love, Alisha

Mrs. Hourihan, Debbie, Darlene, Harold and Bill,

You had a wonderful father and husband. He always had a smile and always upbeat. His family and friends were extremely important to him. His was so proud of his Irish heritage, and by the way thought that since my mom's maiden name was Conley, we were related. Maybe he was right. I remember the time he fixed up and gave you the kelly green Triumph Spitfire, Debbie. He loved to watch us drive away in it. Those were the so many fun days. He would do just about anything for his children. He was so proud and loved you so much, Terry.

I remember the time we moved into the house on Magee Street. Our furnace broke and he came late at night and fixed it, and of course, would not charge.

Well, Mr. Hourihan, I know you are dancing in heaven with your mother. Thank you for your kindness and friendship.
Love,
Ann, Paul, Maribeth, Brian, Kristen and Greg Grant

Hi Terrie,

We're so sorry for your loss. Ted and I often think of you and Harold and wonder how you two are doing. I'll never forget how much Harold enjoyed his Rumba dances and I loved dancing to his beat. Ted still to this day recants his story how he and Harold was at a particular job together. Ted told Harold that he just couldn't get the Waltz down pat and Harold said here, let me show you. As he and Ted were dancing around in the cellar, a few contractors came in and everyone just cracked up laughing. We're still dancing. Still taking lessons, we're going up to the Newton area now. We'll certainly miss him. Our best to you Terrie.

Love,

Sally & Ted

God will surely bestow lots of Irish blessings upon this kind and gentle man. He was a regular customer at Shaws in Hyannis and he always had a kind word and a smile. LOVED his lottery scratch tickets. He always spoke highly about his family, especially his wife, who he always said was the best thing that ever happened to him. He also loved to talk about his daughter, the one "who loves to dance". Peace be with you Mr. Hourihan,...and to all of his family. He will be missed.

Papa,

You were the emblem of what every man should aspire to be...a great husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. Your family was your life. I have never seen a husband and wife as in love as you and Nana… the way you complemented her and would tell me every time I saw you...."My wife is so beautiful!"

I will miss coming over to your house and drinking your awesome coffee (yep you are right...much better than D&Ds) and more importantly talking about life.

I have never seen someone enjoy cookies as much as you and you will forever be my cookie monster!

Your jokes would crack me up...even when Nana would scold you b/c she thought they were too dirty for you to tell me.

Who could imagine that a guy who knew so much about oil, heating, air conditioning, and cars could be such an amazing dancer! Hopefully someday all of us will learn to dance as elegantly as you.

You were the smartest guy and probably the most stubborn...but you had a heart of gold and a sensitive side that I will never forget.

You taught all of us that
“I Love You” should be part of our vocabulary and that there should never be ending to a phone call or a personal good-bye that didn’t end with “I Love You”.

Papa “I Love You” and you will forever be in my memories, and in my heart.

Love, Hugs and Kisses,
Your oldest granddaughter
