RIP Farfar
August 10, 2014
My thoughts goes to Niels' family. Such a loss. I was Niels' neighbor when we were growing up in Denmark. He was the older kid and my big hero. I will never forget him.

Niels' light is still burning in his wonderful design work and in our fine memories of him. Lighting a candle is the appropriate symbolism. Shine on, Niels!

Neils was as great an educator as he was and architect-- Constantly giving tips on parts and maintenance , and sails for my 1961 Alden. In spite of his remarkable skill and success as a naval architect, he was quite modest and generous with his time and advice.

I am sorry to hear of the loss. I met Niels in 1986 or so while I worked for Nelson Mead. We spent time working on a design and still like to look at the lines and blue prints. Niels was very kind and as a young captain I was amazed by the design process and his knowledge. Brett Carlson

I am sorry to hear of the loss of this great man. I learned a great deal from him during the reconstruction of the Alden Schooner Summerwind. He was a great yacht designer, and a good friend. My condolences to his family. Fair Winds Niels.

I am so undone to discover that Niels has left us. I value his friendship and the rich experience of working with him will never leave me. His role as advisor and friend will never be replaced and it will l take a considerable amount of time to reconcile this unexpected and sad news. I am so sorry for your loss. Phin Sprague Jr.

It was a pleasure to work with Niels on our Alden restoration project, and even after the ship was finished, we would stop in to see him every time we passed near Salem. Unfortunately the last time, while showing Trade Wind at the Antique and Classic Boat Show in Salem, August 2013, we could not reach him. He would have loved to see her! And we would have loved to see him! Wishing him well on the other side. Marcy Brenner
