I know this is quite belated, but I just got the news from the Macalester alumni magazine. I was a couple of years behind Jonathan at Mac, so I didn't know him very well, but I remember how kind and funny he was, with such a positive outlook on life. He was an all-around wonderful human being. I ran into Jonathan briefly during orientation when we were both starting grad studies (in totally different areas) at Berkeley, and he was so excited to be starting his journalistic career. I have no doubt that he lived life to the fullest. I am so very sorry to hear of his passing. Love and well wishes to his family.

JK was one of the nicest people I ever met, and a damn fine journalist too. He will be missed immensely.

Jonathan. I never made it to the US before it was too late. You were such an important influence when you arrived in Sweden, showing that the world was a bigger place, filled with poker, American Spirit cigarettes and Violent Femmes. We will be playing Blister in the Sky on repeat, as we ponder this sad and premature loss of a fantastic spirit.

I'm so sad about the passing of Jonathan, I had no idea that he was sick. I haven't seen him since a bit after high school: We were friends and tennis buddies and I went to prom with him even though I had a boyfriend: It probably didn't really go the way he wanted it to! He was always so kind to me and smart and had such a good perspective on the world. He was a good friend and I am sure he went on to do so many good things. My sincerest condolences to his wife, children and family during this hard time.

Dear Ken and Family,

I was saddened for your family to hear of the passing of your son. I did not know him, but have to believe he shared got some of what made him special from your goodness, talents, interests and intellect.

Our conversations around the Jewish holidays, friends and family remain fresh and cherished. I hope this is true of all the memories of your son for you and your family.

Wishing you and yours peace, love and harmony.

Dear Sarah, the memorial service was a wonderful tribute to Jonathan. In all honestly, it felt at first that it helped me to know him a little. By the end, it helped me to regret not knowing him a great deal. Without a doubt, his lost will be keen to you for a long, long time. Please take some small solace in the fact that your boys will know their Dad, from the reflections and recollections of you and his adoring friends and family. With you and with them, they cannot be in better hands.

Dear Sarah,

Although I only met Jonathan toward the end of his illness, even then I was struck by his incisive, no-nonsense approach to ... well, everything that came up, which was a wide-ranging field. He shone, and I hope the light of his curiosity and interest in the world bring you joy in days ahead. I am so sorry for your loss.

It was my honor to work (briefly) with Jonathan when he was with AP in Olympia and I was working the night desk in Seattle. He was bright, hard-working and fun. My prayers and best wishes to all who love him.
