FRANCIS COGLIANO Obituary

COGLIANO, Francis D. Frank M.D. Died on June 26, 2014 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Everett, Massachusetts and raised in Providence, Rhode Island, Frank was a graduate of Classical High School in Providence, Tufts University, and Yale Medical School. He trained as a general surgeon at Harvard Surgical Service-Boston City Hospital. Frank served in the United States Navy from 1967 to 1969 as a surgeon aboard the U.S.S. Coral Sea in the South China Sea and as Assistant Chief of Surgery at the Chelsea Naval Hospital. An accomplished clinician, he served for many years as the Chief of Surgery at Brockton Hospital. Frank was also a dedicated and distinguished educator serving as the Director of Surgical Education at Brockton Hospital and clinical professor of surgery at Boston University School of Medicine. He earned the devotion of his patients and students, receiving the Boston University Surgical Teaching Award several times. Frank was the son of the late Lavinia (Gianetto) Cogliano and Dominic Cogliano. He enjoyed fine food with good friends and was a long-standing member of the Wine and Food Society of Boston. He loved movies, books, travel and his family. He was the beloved husband of Sharon (Smith) Cogliano of Norwell and the late Ann (Kelleher) Cogliano. He was the proud father of five children: Elizabeth Cogliano of Nyack, New York; Andrea Katter of Westport, Connecticut; Sarah Giangrande of Woburn, Massachusetts; Francis Cogliano of Edinburgh, Scotland; and David Cogliano of Natick, Massachusetts. He found joy in the company of his eleven grandchildren: Anna Katter, Charlotte Katter, David Katter, Edward Cogliano, Sofia Cogliano, J.D. Cogliano, Tate Cogliano, Max Cogliano, Gabriella Cogliano, Jessica Giangrande and Andrew Giangrande. Visiting hours in the Sullivan Funeral Home, 551 Washington St, Rte 53 in Hanover on Sunday, June 29 from 1-4 PM. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday at 9 AM in Theclas Church, 145 Washington St, Rte 53 in No. Pembroke. Burial in Washington St Cemetery in Norwell. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Dr. Cogliano to the Department of Surgery at Boston University Medical School. Donations should be made out to Trustees of Boston University, Boston University School of Medicine, 72 East Concord Street, Suite L-219, Boston, MA 02118. I work at Brockton Hospital in Radiology back in the 1970's Dr Cogliano would come down the radiology hallways smoking his pipe Everyone would say Dr C is here....What a lovely man and a fine doctor..He will be missed by all who had the pleasure to know him. So very sorry for your loss
