NATHANIEL SALTONSTALL Obituary

Saltonstall, Nathaniel Nathaniel Saltonstall of Scarborough, Maine died on February 27, 2015. He was the son of Philip L. Saltonstall and Kathryn E. Lapham, born on June 27, 1928. Mr. Saltonstall spent his childhood years in the Hawaiian Islands. He went to Hanahaouli School, then graduated from Punahou School in 1946. He subsequently graduated from Yale University, Class of 1950, and earned a MALS degree from Wesleyan University in 1956. Mr. Saltonstall is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Sibley Saltonstall, whom he married in 1950, his four children: Karen Hasler of Anna Maria, FL; Timothy Saltonstall of Ft. Collins, CO; Susan S. Duncan of Old Lyme, CT and N. Stewart Saltonstall of St. Marys, GA, seven grandchildren, and his sister, Patricia Saltonstall, of Flint Hill, VA. Upon graduating from Yale, Mr. Saltonstall began his career in independent school education by teaching at Mooreland Hill School in New Britain, CT. He moved to Kingswood School in West Hartford, CT where he taught, coached, and served as Director of Admission as well as head of Lower School. He was appointed Head of School of Lancaster (PA) Country Day School in 1962, then became Head of School of Chestnut Hill Academy in 1965 where he served until 1973. His final Head of School position was at Asheville Country Day (now Carolina Day) in Asheville, NC. Mr. Saltonstall worked for Independent Educational Services (IES) in 1979 in Princeton, NJ where he acted as Senior Consultant. He conducted more than 125 nation-wide searches until he retired in 1993. He served on a number of schools' Board of Trustees as well as a longtime member of the Country Day Headmasters' Association. During his retirement years, Mr. Saltonstall provided leadership, time, wisdom, and physical labor to an array of organizations. He served on the Board of the United Way Foundation (Sarasota, FL); on the vestry of St. Boniface Episcopal Church of Sarasota; as a trustee of the Island Institute of Maine; on the Sarasota Chapter of the Florida Conservation Association; as a regular worker for Habitat for Humanity in Florida; served the Pelican Man's bird sanctuary; the Gulf Coast Wonder and Imagination Zone, the Friends of the Rockland (ME) Breakwater Lighthouse; the Rockland Library. Since moving to Piper Shores in Scarborough, ME in 2002, he had volunteered at the Pine Tree Society, the Prebble Street Soup Kitchen, Project G.R.A.C.E, Saint Alban's Episcopal Church, Meals on Wheels, the Scarborough Public Library, as well numerous undertakings at Piper Shores. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed the opportunity to wet a line in such places as Cabo San Lucas, Belize, Costa Rica, Alaska, Honduras, the Bahamas, and, of course, his early childhood home of Hawaii. He and Betsy enjoyed traveling extensively during the early years of retirement and they felt fortunate to have opportunity to visit many countries. Of recent years, their travels have been closer to home, allowing them more time to be with their children and grandchildren which they deemed to be a very real blessing. Nat will be remembered for his generosity, commitment to others, and loving heart. In lieu of flowers, Nat requests that donations be made to your local chapter of Habitat for Humanity.
