STEPHEN SMITH Obituary

Smith, Stephen B., M.D. Passed away April 19, 2015, at age 88. He was born on July 17, 1926 to the late Norman Burlingam Smith and Dorothy Briggs Smith. He was the beloved husband of Audrey Branch Smith. Stephen was born and raised in Providence, Rhode Island, attending Gordon School from 1934-1937, then Providence Country Day School. After graduating from Deerfield Academy in 1944, he enlisted in the United States Navy, serving as a Hospital Corpsman from 1944-1946. He attended Ohio State University Reserve Officer Training, graduating from Yale University in 1949. He matriculated at New York Medical College, graduating in 1954. He performed a surgical internship at the Rhode Island Hospital from 1954-1956, also completing the Diplomate National Medical Board Examination in 1956. From 1955-1957, he returned to active duty as the Medical Officer on the USS Albany (CA 123). During this time, Lieutenant Smith also served as Cruiser Division Four Medical Officer. From 1957-1959, he completed a residency in Surgical Pathology at the Faulkner Hospital in Boston from 1957-1959. He was a resident in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Boston City Hospital from 1959-1962. He completed a fellowship in Gynecological Surgery at the Free Hospital for Women, Brookline, Massachusetts from 1962-1967. He attended the Diplomate American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1965, being recertified in 1978. He was voted a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons from 1966-1992. From 1964-1987, Dr. Smith served as Clinical Assistant and Assistant Clinical Instructor at Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts. He was in private practice for Obstetrics and Gynecology in greater Boston from 1967-1995, with offices in Brookline and Wellesley, Massachusetts. He was on the staffs of the Free Hospital for Women and Brigham and Women's Hospital for 28 years from 1959-1987, also serving on the staff of the Newton Wellesley Hospital. He retired from private medical practice in 1995, completing a 41-year career in medicine. He was a member of the Massachusetts Medical Society from 1962-1989 and a long term member of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. In the 1970's, Dr. Smith served as both Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 145 and Commissioner for Norumbega Council in Wellesley, Massachusetts, completing the Wood Badge scouting leadership program. Dr. Smith was a Freemason, serving as the Worshipful Master of the Mount Lebanon Lodge in Boston, Massachusetts from 2004-2005. An avid sailor, he was Senior Navigator, Commander, and life member of the Nobscot Sail and Power Squadron, Massachusetts, from 1979-2015. He was a member of the Rhode Island chapters of the Order of Founders and Patriots of America, Sons of the American Revolution, and the Society of Colonial Wars. He is in the log of the United States Navy Memorial in Washington, D.C. In addition to his wife, Stephen is survived by five children: Lincoln S. Smith of Chesapeake, Virginia, Nathan B. Smith of San Diego, California, Emily B. Tinsley of Charlottesville, Virginia and her husband Boyd, Elizabeth Smith of Charlottesville, Virginia, Carolyn Vernenkar of Pittsford, New York and her husband Vic, and also by four grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at 12:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 13, 2015, at the Quantico National Museum of the Marine Corps Semper Fidelis Chapel, Quantico, Virginia, to be followed with burial at Quantico National Cemetery, 2:00 p.m., with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the United States Navy Memorial Fund, Wounded Warrior Fund, Brigham and Women's Memorial Fund and Masonic Angel Fund.
