I was at a conference where I just learned of Nicky's death. I am so sad and sorry. She was my professor in the BEST graduate seminar I took at Radcliffe on gender, representation and social control in 1996. She was a wonderful mentor. I recall that she invited me to speak to her classes at NU and then invited me to Johnson State College to speak. I have loving memories of her and she is missed!!!!

So sorry to hear this news from one of her collaborators on the new Oxford Encyclopedia of Crime and the Media. Launching this is a fitting memorial to a spirited and feisty woman who knew her own mind. I feel privileged to have worked with her and known her. A sad loss

Nicky and I were roommates at Solebury School. She had a creative and remarkable intellect. She was a good Democrat as was I.

Nicky's favorite actor was Humphery Bogart, and was distraught when he died. So it seems logical that she would become a distinguished criminologist.

My condolences go to the Hahn family.

Dr. Rafter was the professor who told me that I was more than capable of doing doctoral work, encouraged me to pursue a PhD, advocated for my papers, and was a bold and inspiring leader for many aspiring female criminologists. This is a great loss not just for the students she inspired but for the field. She was recently working on a book looking at the growth and spread of genocidal campaigns. I hope it is still published posthumously.

Nicky and her books helped guide me through my dissertation. She was a ground breaking scholar in the area of Crime and Media Studies. She will live on through our work and the generations of scholars to come.

My heartfelt condolences to the Hahn family, as I fondly remember Nicky, who to me was a kind person with a great sense of humor, a champion for the underprivileged, and a fan of great music (Janis Joplin in particular). She will be missed and always held in high regard by many. Peace in time, Cathy Higley
