JAMES COOK Obituary

COOK, James C. Passed away in Greensboro, Vermont on March 3, 2016, a few weeks before his 92nd birthday. He was born in April 1924 in Troy NY, the second son of Sidney A. and Alison C. Cook. Following schooling in New Brunswick, New Jersey and Windsor, Connecticut, he entered Yale University in September 1941 but left for active service in the Army in 1943. He served with an Ordnance Maintenance Company in England, France and Germany in the last months of WW II. Following discharge in February, 1945 he returned to Yale and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1947. His work experience was varied and challenging. Following three years as an experimental test engineer at the Pratt and Whitney Aircraft Division of United Aircraft, he left to attend the Harvard Business School and earned a Masters Degree in Business Administration there in 1952. Following graduation he joined the consulting firm of Arthur D. Little Inc. in Cambridge, Massachusetts and worked there for six years as a business researcher. He then joined the Raytheon Company in Lexington, Massachusetts, working as a product manager and senior staff analyst for another six years. He then became a partner in a consulting firm in Concord, Massachusetts and researched market opportunities for technologically oriented companies for ten years. Finally he joined the Dynamics Research Company, an engineering services company in Andover, Massachusetts, and worked in marketing and in various technical capacities. He remained there until his retirement in 1994 at the age of 70 for health reasons. He became a year-round Vermont resident in 1998, living in the Greensboro farmhouse his grandfather purchased just before the turn of the previous century. He was active in the Greensboro United Church of Christ, the Greensboro Free Library, the Greensboro Historical Society and the Greensboro Land Trust. He served on the village's Zoning Review Board and as an Auditor. He enjoyed skiing, sailing, singing, traveling to France, researching family history, building boats and model airplanes, being active in village life and participating in community theater. In his last decade he had starring roles in productions of Our Town, Romeo & Juliet, You Can't Take it With You, As You Like It, Morning's at Seven, Arsenic & Old Lace, Spoon River Anthology and A Christmas Carol. He is survived by his son James M. Cook and his wife Amy of Westwood, Massachusetts, and their children, Sarah and Daniel, and James' son, Matthew; his daughter Stephanie, of Ashland, Oregon and her children, Daniel and Susannah Cole; his daughter, Holly, of Wolcott, Vermont; his sons, Roger and Malcolm, of Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts and his brothers, Andrew and his wife, Beverlee, of Hartland, Vermont, and Philip and his wife, Quarrier, of Santa Fe, New Mexico and many nieces and nephews. His first two marriages ended in divorce but he was fortunate to find true love and caring during his remaining years with Rosann Hickey, whom he married in 2008. His family is deeply grateful to his physicians, Dr. Mark Lichtenstein and Dr. Bruce Buckley, to the Caledonia County Home Health & Hospice personnel, especially Nurse Kristin Freeto, and to the desGroseilliers Funeral Home for assistance with arrangements. A memorial service will be held at the Greensboro United Church of Christ on a date to be determined. Interment will be in the family plot in the Village Cemetery.

As an employee of Love Is, I was very fortunate to meet Jim recently . I was able to spend quality time with Jim and had some wonderful conversations with him. He was such an interesting man and seemed genuinely interested in what I had to say. My thoughts and Prayers are with Holly and the rest of Jim's family during this difficult time.
