Jim, who was Jimmy when we were growing up together, and I would go to NY Giant (baseball) games together at the old Polo Grounds. Often his dad, Bill and Uncle Eddie would take us. His mother, Helene and my mother Hermine were best of friends as were our fathers, both named Bill. When Helene died a favorite winter coat of hers was given to Hermine and ultimately given to my wife, Reba who wears it, with fond memories, on cold winter days. Jim obviously had a profound impact on many and I look back on our childhood friendship with a smile and pride at all he became.
Our heartfelt sympathies go out to his loved ones

Gips Family,
I was saddened to learn that Jim has passed away...My two brothers and I grew up across the street from them on Vine Road in Larchmont and our parents were very close and traveled together frequently. I recall visiting with Jim in Palo Alto in the early 1970s when Linda and were traveling out west ...Our younger brother Richard (Dick) passed away in February 2018 after a 16 month battle with cancer and the pain of your own loss is all too familiar to us. Our best wishes to all...and especially to Kathy.

I am saddened to see that Professor Gips passed. I had the opportunity to study with him and was blessed by his dedication and love for the person/student with special needs! His love and dedication will be felt for years/generations to come. He touched the life of my sweet Izzy, they can talk and laugh now forever! A great Man! Will be greatly missed!

I was saddened to see that Jim passed away. When I was in the BC MBA program in the mid-80's, he provided my first introduction to Computer Science. I still remember the programming assignments he gave to us-one of which was to work on airline seating! He was a truly memorable professor.

I send my condolences to the whole family.

As a recent (2017) BC graduate, Professor Gips was by far the most influential person in my college career, shaping me into the thinker, researcher, and computer scientist I am today. Over the years I've met a vast number of students and alumni all over the country who say the same. His steadfast support and mentorship of his students is typical of his generosity which has benefited millions of lives with Camera Mouse, Eagle Eyes, and more. I only regret that I didn't get the chance to thank him enough, and more than ever we should strive to honor his kindness by being academics, technologists, and men and women for others. Rest in peace.

During my freshman year orientation at Boston College in 1996, a professor gave an incredible demonstration of a technology that let the disabled communicate by moving the mouse on a computer with thier eyes. It gave a voice to the disabled and locked in. It was groundbreaking and absolutely mind blowing for the time. That professor was James Gips. The technology was EagleEyes. His presentation ultimately led me to change my major from Biology to Computer Science. He went on to teach me Comp. Sci 1 and Assembly Language, the foundations of programming. I later got the guts up to ask him to let me help on the EagleEyes project. I went on to write games and other apps for the system and met some of the most incredible people I have ever known. I watched people who were otherwise incapable of communication speak to their families and joke around with all of us. There were many smiles and laughs those days. We traveled to Disney World together as a team to accept a Discover magazine award (one of countless that Jim was awarded over decades of research.)
It was on the EagleEyes project that I met my wife Laura. We were introduced while working with one of the EagleEyes students. We have now been together for 17 years and have three daughters. In that time Jim Gips introduced me to my first boss and his family, the Deitels and that job kicked off my career. Later, Jim took many calls from me as I was an anxious new programmer with many questions and insecurities. His advice helped me to make so many important decisions in my early career. Later, he wrote me recommendations for business school and gave me advice whenever I called. He was honest and didn't pull punches. I had incredible respect and admiration for him. He attended our wedding and we attended his. He was a true friend and mentor. He changed so many lives including mine. I owe my major, my career choices, my graduate degree and even my marriage to James Gips. He passed away this Sunday and left the World a much better place. I am so grateful to have had the honor of knowing him. Rest In Peace my friend. Thank you for everything.
