Alvin J. Huntsman Jr., 75, passed away Jan. 15, 2008, at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital from multiple medical conditions. He was born Dec. 31, 1932, in Bozeman to Alvin "Jack" Sr. and Hazel (Baker) Huntsman.

Alvin lived his entire life in the Gallatin Valley. He attended Bozeman public schools and graduated from Gallatin County High School.

He served for 30 years in the Montana National Guard HHC 163rd ARBDE, attaining the rank of master sergeant. He attended Judge Advocate General school in Charlottesville, Va., as well as other military schools, and taught at the Military Academy at Fort Harrison. He was a Chief Legal NCO.

In his civilian life, he was a photo technician at Sullivan Photo from 1955 until 1978. He also worked at Phillips Book Store, F-11, and R. Evans Jewelry. He was a member of the Montana State Genealogical Society, serving one term as president. He loved doing genealogy until a few years ago, when his health declined.

He married Iverna "Ivy" Lincoln on March 20, 1954. They had three sons, Alvin, Scott, and Mark.

He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Mark; his parents, and brothers-in-law, Cliff Lincoln and Chuck Story.

He is survived by his wife, Ivy; sons, Alvin; Scott (Shirlee), and granddaughter, Skyeler; brother, Glenn Huntsman; and sister, Aloma Story. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

The love and pride of his life was his granddaughter, Skyeler Huntsman.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at Dokken-Nelson Sunset Chapel. A military burial service will be held in the spring at Springhill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Gallatin Pioneer Museum, 317 W. Main St., Bozeman 59715; to the Montana State Genealogical Society, 700 Grant, Helena, MT 59601; or to Mount Hyalite Chapter DAR, 29 Brahama Blvd., Belgrade, MT 59714.

Ivy, Al was one of those personalities one never forgets. We spent lots of time chatting over coffee when I worked with him at Sullivan Photo way back in the 60's. I also remember you both from church and loved it when your three little boys would come into the store. Al had a big, sentimental heart. Thinking of you. You know he is in a good place now. Fond memories of Al from the genealogists around the state. We were blessed with his presence even this last year in October when he came again to our State Conference. He will be missed, but how fortunate we were to have known him.

Having only met Alvin one time at the last DAR State Convention in Helena, I was impressed with his friendly nature and pride of Ivy's work in DAR. I'm happy to have met him.

I will never forget Al. He never was without that smile and ready laugh. He whispered in my ear during the receiving line at my wedding--saying just the right thing. It was a sentiment that I will forever cherish. Al was like that. I feel honored to have known him. He will be greatly missed.
