Dear Stephen: As one woman said at the beautiful service yesterday, I didn't know Elaine, I knew "Lainey,' great teacher of my children here and in Italy and one of the most sympathetic and kind persons I have every known. We met in the 60s, and although we haven't seen each other so often, I am so grateful for the fun and enormous laughter during our lunches with Jacki during the last few years.. My thoughts and sympathy are with you. Lainey's death is such a loss to our whole community.

Dear Stephen and Family,
"Lainey" was such a kind, loving and inspiring teacher to me and encouraged me in painting as much as my art teacher. She has been in my thoughts so much of the time and I am so saddened to hear the news of her passing. Going to Italy with you both was so wonderful ! love, Megan Lipke

Twenty years ago I took Latin with ""Lainie" over at BHS. Her love of teaching Greek mythology was infectious and inspiring, and her smile brightened the classroom each day! Lainie - gone too young - you were a great teacher to so many of us that passed thru BHS - requiescat in pace

November 20, 2014

Dear Steve,
I'm terribly sad to hear about this. Latin and debate were a huge part of my time at BHS, and Lainie was at the center of everything. She was the picture of grace, intelligence, and cheerfulness. It was only years later that I came to understand how hard she was working, too! Forty-one years after graduating I am the chair of a department whose signature program is a master's degree designed to train young Latin teachers, and Lainie has been my model the whole way. Sit tibi levis terra.
