JOSEPH WARK Obituary

DR. JOSEPH F. WARK - BURLINGTON - Dr. Joseph F. Wark, 77, passed away on Nov. 20, 2011, in his Burlington home, after an extended and courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Barre on March 1, 1934, the son of Dr. Joseph A. Wark and Merle Ladd Wark. On June 30, 1956, he was married to Ellen L. Pirie in the First Presbyterian Church in Lower Graniteville. Dr. Wark graduated from Spaulding High School in 1952, where he played varsity football, basketball, and baseball. During the summer of 1952, after another successful baseball season with Montpelier Post 3 Legion, he signed a professional baseball contract with the Cleveland Indians. He graduated from the University of Vermont in 1956, where he played varsity football and baseball, and was a proud member of the Delta Psi fraternity. After UVM, he enrolled in the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston, Mass., where he was also a member of the U.S. Ensign Program. Upon graduation from dental school, he served two years as a dentist at the U.S.M.C. base in Parris Island, S.C. and another ten years as an officer in the U.S. Naval Reserve. He then pursued his graduate degree in orthodontics at the Boston University School of Graduate Dentistry prior to opening his first office at 64 Colchester Avenue in Burlington in Oct. 1964. He was appointed assistant professor of histology and embryology at the University of Vermont School of Dental Hygiene in 1965 by UVM president Lyman Rowell. His brother, Dr. Jason A. Wark, joined him in forming Associates in Orthodontics, PC. Other offices were established in Essex Junction, Barre, Middlebury and Newport with the addition of Drs. David Angus and Theodore Librizzi to better serve those patients seeking orthodontic care. He retired from active practice in June 1989, and has spent many happy years traveling, hunting, and flyfishing with family and friends. One of his favorite spots was at Bear Camp in Avery's Gore in the Northeast Kingdom. Another one of his passions was following his grandchildren on the baseball fields, hockey rinks and soccer fields. They were all his pride and joy. He is survived by his wife, Ellen, of 55 years; his son, Joseph A. Wark and his wife, Lisa, and their three daughters, Megan, Lindsay and Holly; daughter, Elizabeth Cobb and her sons, Charlie and Tucker; son, David W. Wark and his wife, Debra, and their two sons, Tyler and Nathan; siblings, Dr. Jason Wark and his wife, Donna, of Charlotte and Nokomis, Fla., Julia and Tom Waterman of San Marino, Calif., Jane and Dr. Craig Trueblood of Wickenburg, Ariz. and Jerry Wark, Esq. of Phoenix, Ariz.; along with many cousins, nieces and nephews. The family gives special thanks to Dr. Neil Hyman, Dr. Paul Unger and Margaret Sussman of VCCM, Claire Weis of VNA, and close family friend, Tara Pacy. At his request, there are no calling hours or funeral services. A private graveside service will be held at the family plot at Elmwood Cemetery in Barre. Memorial contributions can be made to the Visiting Nurse Association (VNA), 1110 Prim Road, Colchester, VT 05446.

Dr Wark was the best orthodontist. He was kind and knew how to talk to his patients. His love of baseball when he was going to play for the Cleveland Indians was impressive. There are many good memories coming to Dr Wark's office. Thoughts and prayers are with you.

I have wonderful memories of visits to the office on Colchester Ave for braces; I guess I must have been one of the first batch of patients judging by may age...I still remember the smell of that Physoderm soap and Dr. Wark scrubbing up. My teeth were so bad and the work he did so good that Dr. Wark told me that he took the before and after castings and photos to exhibit at a conference ...now, maybe that was just a story to make me feel proud--if it was, it worked! All the dentists I have visited in the years since always remark that I had good orthodontic work!
I remember he had a great sense of humor and was always making jokes and putting the patient at ease. My mouth would be full of wires sticking out and Dr. Wark would say, as a joke, "Okay, you're all set, you can go now."
When my dad would come in at the end of the visit there would be lots more talk about hunting (my dad was from the Northeast Kingdom)than how my teeth were coming along!
I was the first in my family to get braces, but almost all of my 10 siblings needed orthodontics too, and had Dr. Wark or his brother. So my parents set up a payment plan of paying $25 a month. That plan lasted for about 20 years, then when my last two siblings started going, the office asked if Mom could please increase the payment to $50 a month. She did. It was only when all the payments were made that my dad's insurance policy started paying toward orthodontic work! Mom always has used the $25 a month story as an example of a very understanding, patient(and remarkable!) service provider.
I am so glad to see that Dr. Wark had 20 years of retirement.
My sympathy to you all. May all your memories bring you comfort and peace.

Dear Mrs. Wark, Dave, and family:
I'm so sorry to hear about Dr. Wark's passing. He had been my orthodontist long ago, and lucky for me, I had the pleasure of reconnecting with him. I have thought of him often as always happy, smiling, and active, and have missed seeing him in the last several months. Please know that my thoughts are with you.

Dear Ellen and Family,
I am so sorry to hear of Joe's passing. He was an honorary grandfather to me (and you Ellen a grandmother). You guys are a part of what made my time in Burlington so special. I am grateful that I was able to spend so much time with you both back then, but am saddened that I haven't been able to in recent years. I am sorry that I can not be there to help you through this difficult time, but please know that you all are in my thoughts. Much Love, Jen Hazard Lemery

Ellen and family;
I heard today that Joe died, he was a wonderful man and I know that you miss him deeply. I have not kept in close contact but at one point in my life you were my second family and a wonderful second family at that. I remember so many moments - Initially sitting on the couch with Joe while he recovered from open heart surgery and I from a knee operation that is where it started. We hunted together, fished both he, and you Ellen opened your house and your hearts to a bunch of college students - who came by to eat, drink and bring their dates for dinner, it was our home on campus. It was my home my senior year and I will never forget that. Ellen you took such good care of us and Joe you always made me feel like I was family. I miss those days as I know all of you do.
My love to all

Dr. Joe Wark will live forever in my memory as a warm, caring fun-loving person who was an excellent orthodontist and a close friend. From my associations with Joe professionally beginning in 1966, when he taught me in my residency at the Mary Fletcher Hospital, to the fun that we had fishing in the snow on the first day of fishing season (we caught nothing and drowned many salmon eggs), I have loved and admired Joe. As I said at the outset, Joe will always be with me, and I have passed his teachings to my children and my colleagues and will do the same for my grandchildren. I know that Joe has done that for his children and grandchildren, and that the appreciation that we all share for Joe will be his wonderful legacy. Patty joins me in sending our love to all of the Wark family and extended family.

Dr Wark would have his big fingers in my mouth making some adjustment to my braces and would ask me questions that, of course, I couldn't answer because his big fingers were in my mouth. And, of course, he knew it. He was so fun. I always looked forward to my visits. He was one of those rare people who have love in their eyes. You know they care the moment you meet them. On to the next adventure Dr Wark. Peace be with you!

Dr. Wark was a beacon of Vermont's great generation. He brought his Barre bedrock to the Queen City and made a lasting contribution. We of the next generation have been blessed to know him and his wonderful family. Doctor, Catamount, Navy man, and Burlington Booster defined him. Being a husband, father, and grandfather drove him. God bless the Warks.
