Dr. John D. Harper passed away suddenly on October 24, 2017 at the age of 78 years. John had a great affection for his family. John was a dedicated husband and incredibly proud of his son's, daughter-in-law's and grandchildren's accomplishments. Highlights of his career included his tenure as a full Professor at Memorial University of Newfoundland, where he was actively involved in advising and mentoring students, his work with Alconsult International and ConocoPhillips, and his time serving as the Director of the Geological Survey of Canada. John is survived by his beloved wife Cathy, of fifty-five years, his beloved children David and his spouse Leanne, grandchildren Ian and Diana of Denver, Colorado; Tim and his spouse Alison and their gorgeous dogs Oakley and Lucy, of the Yukon Territory. I was shocked to hear about John leaving us. I worked with him for a short time but he left a life long impression on me as being the most talented, knowledgeable as well as the best human being. He was a great friend and mentor. I will miss you John.

Tim, my thoughts and prayers to you Ali, your Mom and family. Even though in my lifetime I have had many coaches, John will forever be known as Coach to me. He was always inspiring and had a way of bringing out the best in everyone. I can remember the times with him on the field and at your house like it was yesterday... He will be greatly missed.

I respected John for his inquisitiveness and his care for those around him. He had a natural ability to mentor, sometimes you didn't even realize you were his mentee until you thought back! I will fondly remember the spirit he brought to work, John made it great fun and adventure.
