Charles McCullough Obituary

Charles Vance McCullough October 22, 1943 August 19, 2013 Charles Vance McCul- lough passed away unexpectedly on Monday August 19, 2013, at the age of 69. He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Ruth Hussey; his daughters; Cristin Gadsby (Howard) and Elizabeth Buddle (Doug); his step-children; Jennifer Paulosky (Dave), Andrea Hageman (John) and Kevin Hussey; his siblings; Denise McCullough, Brian McCullough (Deb), Hal McCullough, Jr. (Kathy) and Jeffrey McCullough; his first wife, Kathe Christensen; and his grandchildren, Lauren Gadsby, Howard Gadsby, Grace Buddle, Kayla Paulosky and Erica Paulosky; and numerous nieces; nephews; and extended family. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on Oct. 22, 1943, Vance grew up in Ithaca, N.Y. where he was a 1960 graduate of Ithaca High School. He went on to earn two degrees at Penn State, a BS in Physical Education in 1966 and a MS in Sports Psychology in 1976. Vance was an Army veteran and a graduate of the Infantry School, the JFK Special Warfare School and the Defense Language Institute. During the Vietnam conflict he commanded a Mobile Advisory Team conducting combat operations in conjunction with Montagnard tribesman in the Central Highlands. He concluded his service at the rank of Captain. His decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, the Combat Infantry Badge and associated service medals. In 1971, he returned to Penn State as a graduate assistant and began his full time employment a year later as an assistant in the Intramural Sports program. He was the facility manager for the Intramural Building upon its opening and was later appointed the Coordinator and subsequently Director of the Club Sports program until his retirement in July 1997. Under his guidance the Club Sports program was greatly expanded and gained national prominence for both the scope and accomplishments of the program. Vance was a driving force in creating a club sports department supporting many programs that were organizationally on par with NCAA teams. His legacy includes the Men's and Ladies Icers Hockey teams, as well as the nationally recognized men's and women's rugby teams. In addition to those duties, he served as Athletic coordinator for the Commonwealth Campus System and supervised various aspects of football game day operations at Beaver Stadium from 1988 until 1995. He enjoyed teaching recreational activity courses and taught a very popular course Orienteering and Survival Skills in the 1970's and 80's. In 1989, upon Joe Humphrey's retirement, he assumed the role as "Penn State's Fly Fishing Professor" and continued teaching the Angling course until his retirement. Vance was a skilled outdoorsman and after his retirement continued to guide and teach fly fisherman. He especially enjoyed the limestone streams of Centre County and the big rivers in Montana's Yellowstone country. He was a founding member of the Spring Creek Chapter of Trout Unlimited and remained active to this day in ClearWater Conservancy, participating in the Legends Fly Fishing Clinic and various youth clinics. With his brother Hal, he was the co-owner of Cafe 210 West from 1990 until 2008. Most recently Vance had been spending his time between Centre County, Montana and Florida, always with a fly rod at the ready. Visitation will be from 1-2:30 p.m., on Sunday, August 25, 2013, at Koch Funeral Home, 2401 S. Atherton Street, State College. A funeral service will follow at 2:30 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ClearWater Conservancy at www.clearwaterconservancy.org; the Spring Creek Chapter of Trout Unlimited at www.springcreektu.org, or other environmental or education based charities. Arrangements are under the care of Koch Funeral Home, State College. Online condolences and signing of the guest book may be entered at www.kochfuneralhome.com.

I was a Sigma Nu a year behind "Flint" in school. He and Kent Kirby and myself had a number of "adventures" including hunting rattlesnakes up on the mountain ridge back in the Summer of '66. Great times and great memories. So sorry for the loss to your family. Best wishes.

I deeply regret your loss. Vance and I were friends when
I attended grad school at Penn State. I was an active member of the Spring Creek Chapter and we shared some fishing time together.

Dear Ruth,

I am so incredibly saddened by Vance's passing. He will always hold a special place for me. So many fun times with him, Rich, Ivan and the crews that showed up on my door step over the years.
I am so glad that I got to see the both of you just a month ago.
With Love and sympathy

For some reason I thought today of the incredible Orienteering class I took in summer 1980. I do not remember the names of any college instructors outside of my major but I remembered Vance and googled him only to sadly find his obituary. He had an impact. My condolences.

I am so sorry for your loss. I meet Vance last spring at Clearwater program. He was such a gentleman with his time and expertise. He spent time fishing and teaching and sent me his patterns for the school kids I work with. I was a better person for spending time with him.

Ruth, I'm very sorry for your loss. Vance was an enormous help to me personally during my time running different hockey programs in the early 80s. To me, he was always the right mixture of motivation and yet had a sense of calm. He certainly had a greater influence on me than any of my academic professors. Our prayers are with you and your family. Matt Glass ‘83

Dear Ruth,
My condolences to you and the family. It was a pleasure to work with Vance over so many years. He was the most ardent supporter of Penn State Ice Hockey, but he was also the strongest, outspoken advocate for all Penn State students. He will be missed by all whose lives he touched.

Dear Ruth,

I'm so sorry for your loss. Vance leaves behind a wonderful legacy of community service. He helped many young people...including myself. His support of Penn State hockey has been invaluable. As a "founding father," he is in large part responsible for the success the program is enjoying today. More importantly, he helped build and foster the Penn State Hockey family. For this, I'm eternally grateful.

I am so thankful to Vance for being such a wonderful friend to my husband and for the close relationships my family has developed with the McCullough family as a result of that friendship. Vance touched each member of our family, and his legacy will continue on the streams and lakes her in Northeastern PA because of the love and knowledge of fishing that he passed on to my husband who passed it on to our son and his friends. I was so surprised by the news of Vance's passing. I remember my many conversations with him in the time I helped coach the Icers (1979 – 1984). While I will not be able to make it out to Penn State for the visitation and the funeral please know that I am praying for his family in this time of sorrow. I was glad I got to see him when I was out to Penn State for the announcement of the new arena. Vance was a great man and his efforts for the Icers will never be forgotten.

August 22, 2013

The legacy created by Vance will live on forever in all the arenas he's touched. Specifically speaking, I know his spirit will always remain in the Penn State Hockey program. I know he'll continue watching over the program with that same warm personality and bright smile that he always had. I can still see him beaming with pride over the accomplishments of the student-atheletes. I still see his warm reception of the parents, the coaches, the support staff, the fans, etc. You'll always be with us, Vance. WE ARE PENN STATE!!!

As a PSU Icer Alumni in the late 70's and early 80's, I know we would have been able to accomplish what was accomplished. Then and through to today. I didn't get very involved in the club management in those day's, having trouble making the 3rd line and putting myself through school. What I do know, is that he was always there, and we all knew that he was pulling hard for all of us. Different than the coaches, more of the "Patriarch" and father figure. A long over due thanks you to Vance, and condolences to his loved ones from me and my family.

Two of the most memorable people from my time at PSU and with the Icers are Vance and Ruth. There are no words that can fully describe the positive impact they have provided on me and the Icer family.

The Spring Creek Chapter of Trout Unlimited owes it's beginning to Vance and the five other men who started our chapter. The man was a champion of coldwater conservation. We hope he can hear us when we say that our chapter will carry on the conservation work that he so dearly believed in. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.

From the Garth Brooks song, The Dance." I could have missed the pain, but I"d of had to miss the dance".This was a dance that lasted 40 years, and covered thousands of miles.A dance to the music of fly rods, turkey calls, and the locator bells on English Setters. From Penns Creek, to the grouse coverts of NW Pa, to the Missouri turkey roosts, to the Bighorn River,to your favorite place, the Madison. It was a great dance, and now it is great pain. Thank you Vance for taking me under your wing. Lou
