Bill was simply a pleasure to work with and to learn from. He had a big heart, a warm quick smile and words of wisdom and encouragement for everyone he met. He was such a big help and support in my coming to government and in my work in HIV Epidemiology and prevention. His gentle way and his amazing laugh were just two of a very long list of wonderful and endearing qualities. I am so very sad to learn of his passing but am so blessed by having known him. He was such a blessing - my heartfelt condolences to his family .

I'm very sad to hear about Bill's passing... Bill and I met in 1967 at the National Center for Health Statistics (CDC). We were both in the year-long Junior Professional Training program there and both got into the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service. You really served humanity, Bill, with such an open heart... What I remember most about Bill is his very friendly nature and his uproarious laugh... After all these years, I can still hear it...

It was a pleasure meeting Dr. Jenkins while he was working at CDC, his words always spoke volume when I would attend some of his meetings and trainings. He was definitely a staple at CDC. May the Lord gives the Jenkins family strength during this difficult time!

I am deeply saddened to hear that Bill is gone. He was a great light in this world and his presence here will continue to be felt. I was tremendously fortunate to meet Bill as he was retiring when I first joined CDC. I benefitted from his mentoring and role modeling, and hope my work reflects his influence. He made a strong and principled impression in conversation, with humor, and made me feel listened to. A truly exceptional human being, and one of the most inspiring persons I have encountered at CDC (and there are many here!). His departure is a loss to us all. My heart is with his family and friends.

Bill was a Friend (Quaker). He was a valued member of the American Friends Service Committee community. He knew when to speak and how to share what he knew. Words cannot convey the value he brought to the room.
These words of an early Friend exemplify how Bill shared his life...: "Be patterns, be examples, in all countries, places, islands, nations, wherever you come; that your carriage and life may preach among all sorts of people and to them; then you will come to walk cheerfully over the world, answering that of God in everyone; whereby in them ye may be a blessing, and make the witness of God in them to bless you". Beloved Bill,
We owe you so much as a people, as a nation as global citizenry. You are the truth-teller, the conscience and thought leader for health equity--and a vast array of accomplishments that paved the critical pathway for us all. I shall miss that searching gaze, and apple-cheeked smile. So glad I saw you last summer to talk if only briefly. Your legacy shall be everlasting there is no doubt. You who have now become ancestor will be the reason I look up some days and simply smile at the goodness of it all in our lives through yours. Asante Sana.

Dr. Jenkins was a giant and and inspiration on this journey of Equality ~ His passion and his scholarship shone light onto health disparities and, in particular, in the dark corners of academia and used his science to punctuate and illuminate the fire in his soul for social justice. May he rest in peace knowing that so many of his students and those of us he inspired continue, further impassioned on this road ~ losing such a leader means the burden is now ours to not only bear, but obliterate. Thank you for your leadership and your wisdom. My deepest condolences to your family ~ they have lost a key guiding star.

Prayers are going up for Dr. Jenkins' family. Dr. Jenkins was my Intro to Public Health Sciences professor. His leadership paved the way for undergraduate students from the Atlanta University Center attend the UNC-Chapel Hill Minority Health Conference. I dedicated my Master's paper to him because of the impact he had on my life and career choice. He will be sorely missed.
