James McGavran Obituary

James Holt McGavran, Jr CHARLOTTE - James Holt McGavran, Jr., Professor of English at UNC Charlotte and beloved husband of Dorothy Heissenbuttel McGavran, died at Carolinas Medical Center in the early hours of December 20, 2014, with family at his side. His loved ones are grateful that he passed without suffering, remaining his youthful, active self until the end, and they celebrate a life that touched and improved so many others' lives personally and professionally. Jim was devoted to his family and to Dorothy (Deje), his wife of forty-six years. He was a gentle, generous, and loving man who was not afraid to show his emotions, which frequently burst out of him in joyful or nostalgic tears when he spoke about the people and things he cared about. His fond and reverent memories of his parents and siblings and their vacations to the Leelanau Peninsula in northern Michigan were recently set down in his book In the Shadow of the Bear: A Michigan Memoir (Michigan State University Press, 2010). His pride in his children's accomplishments was evident to anyone who spoke to him for more than one minute, and his wife and family will remember a man who was supportive every day and dependable in any crisis. In his last three years, he experienced great joy reading to and playing the piano with his grandson, Vincent James Horning. Jim grew up in Columbus, Ohio, and earned a B.A. in English from the College of Wooster in 1963. After a year of teaching in a lyc‚e in Bordeaux, France, he completed an M.A. in English at Columbia University in 1965. He taught for two years at the College of William and Mary, where he met the love of his life, Deje. He returned to graduate school and finished his Ph.D. in English at UNC Chapel Hill in 1973. He then began a long, happy career at UNC Charlotte, where he taught for forty-one years. In 2006 he was the recipient of both the English Graduate Students Association Teaching Award and the campus-wide Bank of America Teaching Excellence Award. He was a born educator, treasured by students and colleagues alike for his kindness, infectious enthusiasm, and love for English literature, especially of the Romantic period. Jim's friends and loved ones will remember him as a brilliant and witty personality, a character with tremendous compassion. He learned from his father how to play piano and accordion, and he frequently regaled relatives and party guests with unforgettable renditions of classic songs like "Let the Rest of the World Go By" and "We'll Meet Again." Music was one of his greatest passions-he spent his whole life singing-and he served for many years as a choir member at Christ Episcopal Church and more recently St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Charlotte. His love for nature and the outdoors was reflected in lifelong interests in hiking and gardening. He spent part of his last morning planting pansies. Jim is survived by his wife; by his daughter Catherine McGavran Horning, her husband Andrew, and their son Vincent; by his son Mark D. McGavran and his girlfriend Fr‚d‚rique Laub‚pin; by his son James H. McGavran III and his wife Cherie Braden; by his brother Frederick J. McGavran, his wife Elizabeth, and their daughters Sarah and Marian; by his sister Mary McGavran Crabb, her husband John, and their children Rebecca, Frederick, and David; and by his dear friend Sharon Frazier and her family. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Holt McGavran (1994) and Marion Jaeger McGavran (2001). His place in the hearts of all who loved him is secure, but he will be dearly missed. A visitation will be held at Hankins & Whittington in Charlotte on Friday, December 26, from 5 to 7 p.m., and a funeral service will be held at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in downtown Charlotte at 3 p.m. on Saturday, December 27. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Loaves and Fishes (loavesandfishes.org) or the Leelanau Conservancy leelanauconservancy.org. After googling some of my favorite professors at UNCC, I was saddened to learn about Dr. McGavran.

As an English major in the 80s, I had Dr. McGavran for several classes and vividly remember his enthusiasm for both teaching and English literature (D.H Lawrence comes to mind).

After graduating from UNCC, I later contacted Dr McGavran for a grad. school recommendation and he was more than gracious.

I will not only remember Dr. McGavran as a wonderful professor, but as a kind-hearted person.

I just discovered from Al at Christ Church that Dr. McGavran had passed away. He was the kind of person that never would die. He loved all aspects of life so much that it was understood that his love of life surpassed one's own love of life. I am overwhelmed to learn of his aneurism, the same as my husband's in 1996 when Lee was 48. I would like to extend my condolences to Deje and the family. I knew his as a professor and a mentor; I did a paper on Dorothy Wordsworth for my PhD at USC Columbia, South Carolina and he allowed me to visit his class as a Wordsworth scholar. I was so shocked to learn that the Joyce classes he offered were not filled; this was not due to him, but to a changing world.

I remember Dr. McGavran coming to class with wet hair after a swim break. He was so funny and knowledgeable about his genre of literature. It's been 20 years since I took class with him but I remember him well and fondly. My sympathy is with you and your family.

jim's family,

I was a friend of Jim at Upper Arlington High School in Columbus, Ohio. We had a lot of adventures together, and I remember his good nature and his nice family. We sang together in a barbershop quartet called the "Uncalled Four". My best wishes to his family and friends.

I was an accounting major at UNC Charlotte in the mid-1980s. I was thinking about transfering to UNC Chapel Hill, and was taking some upper level liberal arts classes to facilitate the transfer. I can still the books we read in Dr. McGavran's "Masterpieces of Modern Fiction." I made an "A," and he was shocked to learn I was an accounting major. I went on to law school, where the critical reading and writing skills he taught me were instrumental. Dr. McGavran was one of just a handful of teachers in my life who truly inspired me. My sympathies to his family.

Dear Deje,

Will always remember his wit and wisdom and wicked sense of humor! The bass section is incomplete without him. Memories of Florence Italy in 2000 are my fondest. Praying that you and all of the family will be comforted by the warmth of the memories.

Jim, Deje, Cathy, and Mark McGavran were the first souls the Fraziers met when we moved to Charlotte in 1976. In our 38-year friendship we have shared our daily lives and many adventures. We spent holidays together – always with Jim at the piano, after he made the salad: ) When Jamie was born, he was welcomed into the McGavran/Frazier family. Jim was our grand leader, our spiritual head, and the life of the party. After our kids were grown, Jim and Deje and I shared NC adventures and world travels. We were The Three Musketeers—Jim our gallant escort and driver through England and Italy. Jim was a gentle, kind, loving soul who loved life, his family and friends, his music and garden, and his work. He was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew him. Thanks for the beauty you brought to my life, Jim. Love to all of my McGavran family. Sharon

Dear Deje and family, I am heartbroken. I'm sure there's nothing I can tell you that you don't already know in regards to how truly wonderful Jim was. I had the privilege of working with him for many years and even taking a creative writing class with him just last year. He truly was one of the "best" people I've ever known. May your loving memories of him sustain you through this difficult time.
Love and prayers to you all, Angie

A most gentle man, Dr. McGavran was one of the most brilliant yet humble professors I had the pleasure of knowing. He touched so many lives, and he shaped the careers of so many of his students, including mine. My heart goes out to his wife and children. He will be missed!
