I remember back in 1950 Coach Harris and his beautiful wife would occasionally drive by in his blue Chevrolet and stop me on my afternoon paper route on Berryhill road to buy a newspaper from me. They always gave me a big smile and that would be the highlight of my day. He was a remarkable man that gave so much to so many from the football field and beyond and his memory will live on in all the lives he touched. My condolences to the family.

Though our introduction was just a few short months ago, we all quickly fell in love with this delightful, wonderful man. Reading his life story and knowing Andy and Sherry and their children, we are assured why. Our condolences to you all and especially Mary Arden.

I am honored to join the Harding faithful and other friends of the coach in mourning his passing and remembering his gifts to the westside. I cannot think of him without remembering my own father and the many years they shared as coaches at Harding and the summers they spent at Revolution pool running the concession stand. We as young men and women were fortunate to have such men as them and also Mr. James R. Hawkins to guide and support us. My condolences to the family. You were lucky to have him so long.

I remember as a 9 year-old boy, laying in my bed at night, dreaming of the day I would be able to play for the mighty Rams of Harry P. Harding High School and the legendary Coach Dave Harris. He was the Tom Landry of area High School Sports, a legend in his own time. He taught us players more than football. He taught and showed us how to live with character, integrity, honesty, and loyalty. I got to introduce him to my son, when he was 6 years old, and my son now 30 still remembers it. Now, I am the Pastor of Fellowship Baptist Church here in Charlotte and I feel that through the influence of Coach Harris, I came to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. My prayers are with his dear family.

A wonderful man was buried today, I have so many wonderful memories of the football games during my years at Harding High School. but my greatest one of all was when I wanted swimming added to Harding High School and had to address the CMS Board to get this approval, with Coach Harris on the Board and after a lot of talk on my part looking like I would not with this for lack of a place to swim practice and also lack of funds for the swimteam suits,I looked at Dave sitting on the Board and said Coach Harris, I know you too well, if you had a team of football players wanting to play, and you were willing to find the way you would, well I am in that same spot. So I was granted approval to have swimteam at Harding High School with pride.
Coach Harris was a one of a kind person.

Mary Arden and Family,
I was just notified by my sister who lives in Charlotte that Dave had passed away and my heart and prayers go out to you all. I counted Dave as a true friend. I once wrote something about him to the effect, that "some day there may be an athletic administrator who is equal to the talents and abilities of Dave Harris, but none will ever surpass him." Though those were my thoughts some 20 years ago, I still believe that regarding my friend, Dave Harris, today. Earth's loss is heaven's gain. May he rest in peace and may you have the comfort and joy knowing that he was among the best and brightest this world has ever known.

Coach Harris was the person that taught me that playing football would help prepare me for life. Because of him I went to college, played football, graduated and became a coach and athletic director. I had dropped out of Harding several times and because of the football coaches at HHS I returned to get my diploma. My successes as a coach and athletic director, principal I would contribute to the coaches of Harding and especially Coach Harris. I looked forward each year in meeting him again at coaches clinics and athletic directors conferences.

Mrs. Harris and your family.
Our deepest sympathy on the loss of your husband. He was always known to us as Coach Harris, as we attended Harding High School in the days he was there. George was one of those who received a scholarship thanks to being able to compete on Coach Harris' teams. We both remember him fondly and George with particular respect and gratitude. To the family of Coach Harris: He was my coach at Harding High School in late 1950s. He was my hero and I followed his leadership to become a high school coach and athletics director. I looked forward to seeing him many times at State Coaches clinics and Athletic Director's conferences. He taught me to love athletics and to successfully coach young people. He wil be missed by all that played for Him.

I learned of Coach Harris' passing through a phone call from my old classmate, Bill Weddine today. It saddened me, but Bill and I talked about stories that Coach told and about how much we all admired him, even revered him. He deserved it. He was a man we all looked up to, as players and students. He set examples all of his life about the honorable way to live.
He will be missed, but not forgotten.

He seemed to never forget an individual. I watched him play in the Charlotte Clippers and had him at Harding High til 1949. After being out of town for 10 years I met him on the street and he spoke to me as if we had just been together all th time. I did not have the pleasure athletically but know a good man.

Hot August practices, sweat, running, hitting, blood and all the things Coach Harris required from his players. To us he was a giant of a man and our Head Coach! Assistant coaches Crawford, Savage, Boogie Smith, and Coach Bumgarner alongside Coach Harris built men out of boy's. You have always been in our hearts and memories as the years have gone by - we loved you and always will!!!! David Doby Class of 1965

One of his old football players said, "We'd have run through a brick wall if he'd told us to." And they would have. That's the kind of coach and man he was, and will be sorely missed in the lives of those he coached and/or touched. Few can say they had a life well lived and a life lived well, but the Coach can.

Coach Harris took mentoring from playing on grass to living in faith. I grew up seeing him as a present-day David bringing down old Central and winning state championships in football. My brother graduated from Harding in 1953; he died in 2005 still talking about Marion Justice, HR Cunningham, and all. I was a person who arrived at Harding in the early 1960,s. Coach Harris encouraged me to play, but never pushed, pried, or pulled me. I came down with an eye disease that left me terrified, because there was a genuine risk of blindness. During that time of fear, it was Coach Harris who became a
rock solid mentor. His taking the time, dressed in t-shirt and shorts with a whistle draped around his neck, showed me there was more to see in this world than helmets and pads. It was he who opened my spiritual eyes to see a Kingdom in God's Presence and a saving, healing Jesus. He was the real deal, a real man, a real believer. For the next few years he provided guidance without my even knowing he was counseling. He coached me into a life deeper in and further up in a living faith. I thank God for making a good man.
