Stan Patten Obituary

On April 18, 2018, Stan ended his journey on earth that began on June 11, 1943, when he was born in Yoder, Indiana, the third son of Dorothy and Illa Patten. His older brothers, Robert and Larry, were already a part of the family, and his sister, Dianna, would arrive a few years later. Growing up in small town Indiana, surrounded by extended family members, shaped Stan's early life and gave him values he carried throughout his life. Leaving Yoder, Stan went to Butler University where he was awarded a BA in English, and then went off to Waldia, Ethiopia to spend two years in the Peace Corps, Stan taught at Bishop Dwenger High School, where he engaged his students in a tutoring program at St. Mary's School, part of an inner city parish that served the underserved in Ft. Wayne. After the assassination of Dr. King, Stan became the director of volunteers and the day to day director of the Martin Luther King Center. Later Stan would earn an MA from IPFW in English and a PhD in English and Philosophy from Purdue University.

Stan then moved to Charlotte, North Carolina to teach at UNCC. During his tenure, Stan taught English and Women's Studies, while also developing a first class writing center that provided free tutoring and computer services to students, staff, and faculty. In 1999, Myasthenia Gravis forced Stan to end his teaching career, but it did not quench his thirst for ever more knowledge and understanding.

In 1990, Stan bought a home on a street, near uptown Charlotte, called Mimosa. The years on Mimosa were the happiest of his life. He found a tribe of people that he loved and enjoyed as much as his own large, ever expanding family. In a poem he wrote about his street, he sang the praises of "the pulse, the thumping heart / that makes a street, a dead-end street a home," noting that "People who might never meet on another / street find common cause, find reasons / to stay, to be involved, reminding all / of earlier times when towns were small / and people large, when hearts were intertwined / by proximity."

Stan's Father, his brother Larry and his nephew Tracy all ended their journey before him. Left to continue their journeys are his amazing Mother Dorthy; Bob and Deanna, Joyce, Dianna and Steve and their wonderful families who gave Stan such joy; relatives and friends too numerous to mention, his neighbors on Mimosa Avenue, and Waldia.

If you wish to celebrate Stan's life, services will be held on April 29, at 12pm at Elzy Patterson Rodak Funeral Home, 120 West Mill Street, Ossian, IN. He would ask that you make the effort to love and understand people not like you, take the time to let people know you love them, read a book to a small child, help people who with a little support can make it on their own, laugh at life and at yourself, and most of all be kind to others and to yourself. It also pleased him greatly if you voted for Hillary. Stan wants you to know that he enjoyed his life journey and wishes the same for you. Stan recognized that love is a pearl produced through living life. As he wrote: "I think it's love, just a pearl, that proves to us / we need the sand, we need the rub, to fuel our soul." He thanks you for being a beautiful pearl in the necklace of his life. Peace.

Still missing you, Stan - Back in the 80's, you quickly touched my life as one of my best teachers ever, an inspiring friend, the best of best mentors and an ongoing motivator to me even long after I graduated from UNC-C. And -- to this day, you inspire me...you were a kind, entertaining and always thoughtful teacher, Stan. It's the best legacy of all that thinking about you continues to bring instant smiles and feelings of deep gratitude to the hearts of all who were blessed to know you. Thanks for being a enormously gorgeous, precious pearl on my life's necklace.

I was Stan's student, his graduate teaching assistant as a tutor in the UNC Charlotte Writing Center, and a friend after he left UNCC. He was one of the finest human beings I have ever known, and it was my great pleasure to have known him. RIP

Sweet, sassy, brilliant Stan. Thank you for the illuminating conversations, quick wit and liberal outlook. It hurts knowing you will not be on that dead end street we all loved called Mimosa. But I can imagine a new street where cocktails and conversations are served all day, hors d'oeuvres and Easter bonnet parties reign supreme and where good friends reunite for their next mission. Kiss Michelle for me and tell her when its my turn, I'll bring her a block of cheese. Rest now.

Stan was an amazing teacher then lifelong friend and I am forever grateful for selecting a class from this new teacher at UNCC when I was 18 in the Spring semester of 1983.
From that class until several years after graduation we had a close, adventurous, hilarious and deeply nurturing friendship.
He was a happy spirit with bountiful insight and wisdom. Having reconnected in the last 15 years, I remain blessed to be his friend and will always hold his warmth, tough love, kindness, and our unforgettable times in my heart. Stan, I'm still trying to think more like you and will love you always.

You were the first person to reach out to me when I started looking for information on Myasthenia after my husband was diagnosed. You became this person who brought intelligence and beauty into my life with your considered words and pictures of your life. I hope you know how treasured you were by many.

Stan was my cousin in-law from the Johnson-Patten family. He was a gifted educator and writer, a prolific reader, and a kind, snarky, loving, and very grounded person with a clear vision. I could go on, but I've made myself cry and he would not approve. So...with a touch of wine I say, "Cheers to you, my friend. You were a joy in my daily life and a support when I had none. I love you dearly and will not forget you."

I actually rented a room In Stan's Mimosa Ave. house in 1992. I had just returned from playing piano on a cruise ship to Russia and Scandinavia, and arriving back in the U.S. was a confusing and transitional time in my life. Stan provided a calm and peaceful space for me to work things out. ----- I remember him sitting out on his front porch drinking tea, welcoming visitors who came up the walk, talking to Sable his sweet dog, and taking in the neighborhood street he loved so much. In his gentle wisdom, Stan knew to never offer answers, but to ask questions, and to just be present. -------- I was impressed that he taught English at UNCC, and now I'm actually teaching English there part-time. --------- I'm sad to know of his passing and am grateful for his life.

Sue Thompson, The mother of his beloved friend Michelle Thompson who left us on July 15, 2016. She loved Stan and that's how I knew him. I visited him a few times and we loved to talk politics even though we didn't agree as I'm conservative, we found a lot interesting things to talk about. He was so nice, and the best memories I have is when my beautiful daughter always thought of him when she cooked a great meal and always took Stan his dinner. She watched over him. Now they can be together again.
