Arthur Hansen Obituary

Arthur Eugene Hansen
'Gene'
CONCORD -- Mr. Hansen, 63, of Concord, died Saturday, August 15, 2009, at his home.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held Sunday, August 23, at 2 PM at Calvary Lutheran Church. Rev. Bill Milholland and Rev. Dr. John E. Boyd, Jr. will officiate. The family will receive friends following the service. Burial will be Saturday, August 29, at 10 AM at North Myrtle Beach Memorial Gardens, 65 East Hwy. 90, Little River, SC 29566.
Gene was born in High Point, NC, on June 28, 1946, to Betty T. Hansen and the late Arthur M. Hansen. He graduated from Allen Jay High School, where he served as Student Body President. Gene attended Western Carolina University, where he served as President of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity.
He spent his professional life in sales, and was Vice President of Sun Flooring, Vice President/General Manager of Fletcher Machine Co., and recently, Regional Sales Manager of WATT Publishing Co.
Gene served in both the US Marines and US Army Reserves, and was Honorably Discharged from both in 1975.
He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Stiles Hansen, of the home. His children are Amy Hansen Chiott of Charlotte; Chad Hansen and wife, Jamie Cooke Hansen, of Charlotte; Graham T. Stiles and wife, Karen Humphrey Stiles of Harrisburg; and Sterling R. Stiles and fiancee Pattie Huggins, and her son, Colby Huggins, of Surfside Beach, SC. He is also survived by his mother, Betty Taylor, and stepfather, Eddie Taylor, of Salem, Virginia; as well as Deanie and George Bartlett, and Gene and LaRue Tolbert of High Point, Todd, Tina and Savannah Barlett of Kernersville, Karen and Dan Scott of Thomasville, and Dave and Elaine Tolbert of Lexington.
His source of much joy and pride in his life was his grandchildren: Jordan Chiott, Brandon Chiott, and Braxton Chiott, all of Charlotte, and Lily Stiles of Harrisburg.
Gene's hobbies were many, but foremost to him was the love and pleasure of his family. He enjoyed traveling with Mary, golf, tennis, reading, scuba diving, fishing with his sons, his high speed runs on his Harley with his buddies, and the foot races he was able to run with Chad and Graham. His last race included a 5k with all 4 grandchildren, and Graham, Chad and Amy in November.
Gene's 9-year battle with melanoma cancer was full of many blessings, and the kind, loving acts of so many friends have helped this family tremendously. We appreciate all your prayers and love.

I too worked with Gene at Sunflooring, and he was one of the most remarkable people I have ever met. Never did he a bad word to say about anybody, and in those days it was hard. I will never forget the friday sales meetings and the positivity he brought out in all of us.
Our world was certainly a better place because of Gene and his postive attitude.
God Bless and family

Mary and Family – Gene has been a friend and confidant for over 40 years. It seems we talked to each other at least twice a month for a long period of time over things that made each other feel better about the world. He had a way of making you see a different light. I will miss him greatly, but knowing he is in God’s Kingdom gives me, and you I am sure, comfort. May he rest in peace and you have comfort in knowing you WILL see him again in heaven.

To Mary and Family

Our thoughts and prayers are with you. We had the pleasure of working with Gene. He was one of the most positive people we had ever met. Everytime he talked about his family his whole face would just light up. He never let his illness never got him down. May God Bless you and give you peace in your time of sorrow.

Although I only had the privilege of meeting him once, I felt like I knew Gene from all the wonderful things Mary shared about him when she came into our office. You could always tell how very much she loved him! We have prayed for you through this very tough time and we will continue to pray for you in the days ahead. I know God's grace is sufficient and He will carry you.

Mary and Family,

Gene exemplified not only what our fraternity meant to him, but also what true brotherhood is to all of us. Our love for Gene will endure because he tried to do so much for others and accomplish what he could do for his fellow man while here on earth. He is an inspiration to me, as well as, to all of us who knew him. He will truly be missed by all who knew him.

To "Gene's" family,
My heartfelt sympathy to all of you. I knew "Butch" from the time we were in 3rd grade at Allen Jay School. Even though we had been out of touch except for the occassional school reunion, I thought of him often. I know all of his former classmates at Allen Jay are saddened by his passing. We will keep you in our prayers.

Mary,

We feel your pain and we pray for your comfort and peace. Gene was a very special "best friend" for over 50 years. From the time we spent on the beach at 10 years old and getting sun burned..........who knew? We spent many years working together, riding our Harleys, sharing the marble story and just enjoying life. He was a very special person in my life. I really know what he meant to me and what I meant to him. His loss is a piece of my life. Please be at peace and know that he is in God's kingdom, and away from the worries of this world. You know what he meant to me and I know how you loved him. It's a lot for one person to share. We love you and pray for your peace and comfort as you try to accept God's will. We love you and pray for you and his entire family.

Love,

Chuck and Sylvia

Mary,

You know how much Gene meant to me and I know how much I meant to him. Going back over 50 years....playing on the beach at 10 years old, getting sun burned.........who knew? I have so many memories from the beach times, working together, the Harley rides and sharing the marble story with him. He was like a brother to me and I have lost a part of my life when he passed. I know you know what I mean and we truly pray for you and your families and know that we will rejoice with him again someday. We love you and share your pain. Life has been blessed by the most wonderful, loving and memorable best friend anyone could ever have. May God's graces be with you and all of his family.

Hi Mary, You have been in my prayers for some time now and I have been keeping up with you and Gene through Deborah. You are a very special lady as Gene was a gentleman, and you are not alone. Know that I continue to pray and think of you during the days ahead. God will provide. I will see you soon. Love you,

August 18, 2009

Mary and family,

Jada and I are deeply saddened by Gene's passing. God's word tells us that eternity with our Lord is a joyful and wonderful time after this life on earth, which last for just the blink of an eye. The faith that you and Gene lived everyday and the integrity you modeled in your lives raises the bar for all of us. As you know, I knew Gene as a frater at WCU; however, over the last two years I drew strength and comfort from Gene. When I called to see how he was doing he would always, always shift the conversation to how was I doing with my multiple strugles in battling that dreaded disease. Jada and I will miss Gene, a man of strong commitment to his faith, his marriage, his family and his friends. It is our prayer that the Lord give you and your family comfort during this time.

Amy, when I first met your Dad, I said to myself, I want to be a Dad like him to my boys when I grow up. Well, I'm not sure I accomplished that goal but at least I'm pretty sure I finished 2nd. I still haven't gotton over getting beat in Tennis by a man 17 years older than me but that just goes to show how great he was. I know he will be sooo missed by all those that knew him except those who played against him :) Our prayers are with you every day during this time and Marta and I are here for you if you need anything, ANYTHING! We lova ya James and Marta Weymann

Mary, I am thinking about you each and every day. I will not come to Concord for the funeral, but I will be at the graveside service at North Myrtle Beach. Picco and I look foward to seeing you and Harley Hope at the beach. He still tries to go in your house each time we go for a walk. I'm glad that Gene is now free of pain after such a very long time. Lots of Love, Mitzi

Mary and Family,

Jackie and I are thinking of you and your family during this difficult time. I know how much Gene loved you and his family and you all can be at peace knowing you love him equally well and cared for him and that Gene is at peace and fully restored. You will see him again some day. Gene Hansen was a dear friend for forty one years and a person whom I have always deeply admired. His sense of humor, compassion and care for others will always be remembered. When you think of the term "friend" and look up the definition...the name Gene Hansen could be used as the example. We mourn with you and want you to know that we stand with you with our thoughts and prayers and are available to help you in any way that we can.

Mary and Family, words cannot express how much Gene will be missed, he was indeed a very special person. Gene was the type of person that left a lasting impression on your LIFE. He always was upbeat, had the most remarkable outlook on life that any one person could have. I don't think Gene ever met a stranger he was a friend to everybody and I mean FRIEND. He truly loved his family and friends. Working with Gene at Fletchers, gave me an opportunity to get to know him and the impact he left on everyone. I think he made this world a better place. No one can ever replace him, there surely will be avoid. but what a joyous spot God has given him. He truly was an Angel on earth. Now an Angel in heaven. I know Gene will be watching over you. My prayers are with you all.

Gene,

You were a true champion in life and in advocacy for Western Carolina University. I was always energized each time we worked together on WCU Scholarship projects. You were so passionate and dedicated. The Doug Shirley Fund and ZO TKE Fund would never be at the levels they are without you. They will continue to give back to students each year in very meaningful ways. Your legacy remains in many ways including these scholarships. I fondly remember talking about running with you each time we met or spoke. I'm glad you got to do that 5K with your grandkids! We always left each other with the words...."keep running!" and I'm glad you did! -Brett Woods former Director of Development, Western Carolina University
