Dear Jim and Irene and family,
I was saddened to learn of the loss of your brother. How difficult to lose a sibling. They are the ones who travel the road of life most closely with us. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and his family at this time. Hope to see you soon to express my condolences in person.

My sincere condolences go out to Joe's entire family. After WHS I would run into Joe working on job sites and we would talk, and one thing I could always count on was that Joe always was always happy with what he was doing at that time in his life. He was truly taken from us too soon.
I will be out of the country when you honor Joe's life with a celebration open house on Saturday, August 23. Though I will be unable to be there, I will be setting time aside to remember him on that day. God bless Joe and all of the family members, he will be truly missed.

I have not seen Joe since HS but felt obligated to let his family know that in our class from 1969 you would be hard pressed to find anyone who had anything but the kindest words about Joe. I transferred in the to the area at WHS my freshman year and Joe always was warm, kind and respectful to everyone he met. He made me a better person for the kindness he showed me.
My deepest sympathy to his whole family.

The world has lost a giant of a man. Joe "Pooch" and I became friends about 41 years ago when we were both laborers then apprentices. He became a plumber and I a bricklayer. Somehow we called each other Pooch -and it never changed. Many years of fun times playing golf, having dinners and living life. As years passed and our families grew we could still pick up the phone and talk like we saw each other yesterday. Joe was blessed with an incredible sense of humor and a heart bigger than anyone I will ever know. Our condolences to Pam, Ashley and Matt and Jim and John too. I sure miss my buddy!

My sisters and I lived across the street from the
Whittington clan for many years (on Pine). Joe and I were the same year graduates of Wheeling High School. He was a great guy; funny and friendly, everyone enjoyed being around him. He was our local football hero! I am so sorry to hear of his passing. My sympathies to his wife and children, his brothers and extended family. Mary (Allen) Thomas

Dear Pam, Ashley, Matthew, Jim, and John, and the whole Whittington family,
On behalf of myself, and Joe's entire Wheeling High School class of 1969 I would like to offer our sympathies and extend our condolences at your loss and Joe's untimely passing.
In all the messages posted on Facebook about this heart wrenching loss, and in the email messages that have been sent to me, they universally remember Joe as a happy, smiling, congenial soul, with good kind words for everyone and a great sense of humor. I am personally rewarded to be able to have been friends with Joe during our years at WHS and so glad that I had an opportunity to renew that friendship at homecoming in 2009.
May you find comfort that Joe is at peace now and forever in the hands of God.
