DAVID HERNANDEZ Obituary

David Hernandez, 66, native of Cidra, Puerto Rico; "famous poet" (Chicago's unofficial poet laureate) and educator, passed away unexpectedly February 25, 2013. Beloved husband of 20 years to Batya Hernandez (nee Mandel); devoted "Popi" of Matea Flora Hernandez "Matty Flowers"; dear stepfather of Jeff and Chana Goldman; step-grandfather of Benita Goldman; loving brother of Sam (Lupe) Hernandez, Alma (Soloman) Wells, and Eliud (Frieda) Hernandez. Faithful companion of Moonshine the cat. Preceded in death by his parents Higinio Hernandez and Benita Garcia Hernandez and his favorite scrappy mutt, Lumpen. Springtime celebrations of life to be held. Please check back to this website for further information as it becomes available. A college fund is being established for David's daughter. It's been many years since David worked with my 5th grade students at Agassiz School, but I vividly remember the joy in my classroom as we all created poems. What a great loss! He made words come to life. He will be greatly missed.
