Scott Standard Obituary

Scott Sumner Standard, 46, died Monday evening, January 24, 2011, outside his family home in Ozello, Florida. A lifelong resident of Citrus County, Scott was a devoted family man renowned for his vast knowledge of salt water fishing and rare zest for life. He was a true friend who did so much for so many and never expected anything in return.
Why a blessed life came to such a tragic, undeserved departure is baffling to all who knew him.
Scott was born on February 15, 1964, in Beaufort, South Carolina, and was raised in Florida from the age of 8 months. He graduated from Crystal River High School in 1982. At 14, he quickly became an asset on his parent's 49-passenger deep sea fishing vessel, The Apollo. At 18, the youngest age possible, he earned his Charter Captain's license and began his lifelong tenure at the helm under his father Fred's loving guidance, sharing his love of life on the water with all he met. Not only did he fill the box with fish, but he filled everyone's day with laughter and new friendships. He was a man's man who loved his wife, children, family and friends unconditionally.
Scott was a lover of good music and great company and could dance up a storm (or maybe a hurricane with his style of dance). He had plans to restore an old Jeep with his son, Scotty, so they could go mudding together like "Back in the Day!" Whenever Scott's daughter Jossie entered the room, his eyes would light up with love and boundless pride. Scott had a creative side and could often be found crafting handmade lures and custom rods in his shed by the water.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Joellen Standard; two beloved children, Scott and Jocelyn Standard, of Ozello, Florida; mother and father, Barbara and Fred Standard of Crystal River, Florida; brother, Ric Standard of Crystal River, Florida; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Scott is predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Mary Rita Rowland and Summer Carlton Rowland from Boston, MA; and paternal grandparents, Alma Nora Standard and Fred Thomas Standard from Glenville, GA.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, February 2, at Crystal River United Methodist Church, 4801 North Citrus Avenue, Crystal River, FL, 34428. All Scott's friends are welcome to join us as we honor his life and memory. Reverend Alan Jefferson and Pastor David Gill will officiate.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Strickland Funeral Home & Crematory, 1901 S.E. US Highway 19, Crystal River, Florida. In respect of Scott's wishes, his ashes will be scattered by his loved ones into the sea breezes somewhere in the Gulf of Mexico, his never-ending stomping ground.
Contributions in memory of Scott can be made to Hospice of Citrus County, P.O. Box 641270, Beverly Hills, Florida, in support of the grief counseling services they offer children who have lost a loved one.
Scott Standard's anchor may no longer link him to this world, but we have faith his course is set for sweeter waters.

Joellen - Thinking back on it now, I realize I only ever met Scott a handful of times over the years you were together. But he was always the same person - gregarious, confident, warm. Whether it was on the boat or at your parents' anniversary party, he always exuded a love for life, for you, and for your children. When I read Brody the Percy Jackson books, I realized that it was Scott's image I had in my mind whenever the author mentioned Poseidon, god of the seas. He will be missed and fondly remembered, and my heart is with you all.

Words are hard to find to express how deeply hurt Scott's family must be. It is unbelievably hard to comprehend such a senseless act that took the life an extremely talented fisherman, father, brother, son, husband and friend to so many.

We come to know Scott and his dear parents Fred and Barbara thirty some years ago when we settled here in Crystal River. Our love of boating and fishing drew us close to the Standard's.
