One of the most impressive and heuristic leaders I've ever known. He made you better by helping you find yourself through motivation and the right amount of tough love. I went on to play college football, which led to my career in news. And all throughout, I never forgot my humble upbringing as a poor refugee, Hialeah High and the people who influenced me when I was scared and knew nothing-- people like Coach Bob Hipke. I am so sorry to hear of Coach Hipke's passing. He was one of a kind, beloved by all who played for him. Practices in the S. Fla heat can be drudgery. He always made it fun, coaching and correcting in a firm but good natured way that was never taken personally. He was not my position coach and I envied the guys who played directly for him. They always seemed to be having the most fun. As Pat Lyons said, he always was playing quirky music. For me, it was "Surfer Joe" (by the Surfaris). He would lift the arm off the old stereo of the day so it would play incessantly. It brings good memories and I have it on my IPOD 47 years later. I'll play it today in his memory. He was that rare individual who could lift you up by his very being. He had "The Gift". No matter what teenage angst you were going through, it was impossible not to smile in his presence. My condolences to his family. He was a special man who touched and influenced the lives of many.

Though forty-three years have passed since my days of playing for Coach Hipke, the values that he instilled in me and the lessons that he taught me have never left. They are part of who I am and what I have accomplished in this life. Coach Hipke loved us for who we were and tried not only to teach us how to play the game of football but also how to behave as gentlemen on and off the field. He has and always will be remembered by all of us who had the priviledge to be part of his team and part of his life. Thank you Coach for your dedication and committment and also for having faith in an undersized Cuban lineman who you entrusted in anchoring the defensive line. My sincere condolences to the Hipke family. Coach Hipke will always be remembered. "FAITH & PRIDE" was what he taught us. God bless.

Coach Hipke...what an icon of Hialeah High School! I'll never forget the pep rally in the courtyard. The cheerleaders were on the roof of the overhang and you climbed up to deliver some words of inspiration. I turned around and looked and you jumped from the roof to the courtyard. I thought you sure knew how to fire up a crowd. Thanks for all the good memories.

January 26, 2013

From my heart I thank the Lord Jesus that I was able to know Coach Hipke the short time I did. Some of the things he helped plant in me a long time ago are: FAITH, COMMITMENT, HEART, DISCIPLINE, HARD WORK, DEDICATION, EFFORT, PREPAREDNESS, TEAMWORK, and a never give up winning spirit. I remember coming in early and seeing him hitting the weights. I remember coming in and seeing him hitting the track. I remember all of us being soaked in the pouring rain of a typical Hialeah school day, seeing him doing pushups while our varsity sports class played gator ball. I remember him saying to us "men, if you're going to run the race, run it to win or don't run it at all". What an inspiration and motivator he was! In life's ups and downs, the example he was to me back then still helps me to be victorious no matter what comes up, and everyday I pray that I can be a good example to people for the Lord in such ways as Coach Hipke was to me. Thank you Lord for letting me cross paths with Coach Hipke. My deepest sympathy to Ms Hipke and family.

Respectfully Yours,

Bob Hipke as my HS football coach in Hialeah from 1968-1970. He stood for integrity and himself told the truth to players, even when they didn't want to hear it. After a serious injury my senior year, Coach Hipke frankly told me that I should now pursue my studies; his counsel was that it was unrealistic to expect that my knee would heal fully and that it was a better future to be built on academic excellence. I went to college free from football, and ended up with a career as a professor. Coach Hipke sent me forward with truthful insight, and I will always appreciate his role in setting me in the best direction. I wish I had seen him since a visit home in 1974. I mourn his passing, sending condolences to his family.

Rest in peace, Coach. I have great memories of THE coach from 1970-1971. The funniest thing he said to me, that I'll never forget:
"Steding, you're so lazy, you probably sit down to pee".... Coach had a way to get to you, and I WAS lazy and out of shape. Coach Hipke had a big impact on me and I often times wanted to reach out to him and say, "How do you like me now"??? I am thankful for his role in my life.

I remember Bob the best not as the A.D. at CRMS, but as the Dean of Students. I continually marveled at the way he could be "chewing" out a student for a disciplinary problem and the next minute he'd come walking out of his office with his arm around the student's shoulder with the biggest smile on his face and chatting up a storm. The problem was dealt with and forgotten. The way he could turn a negative experience into a positive was amazing. I will miss that big smile and sense of humor. He was truly a great man and will be missed by all.

So sorry for your loss Gert.

I remember Bob best not as the A.D. at CRMS, but as the Dean of Students. I continually marveled at the way Bob dealt with disciplining students. One minute he'd have a student in his office just "chewing" him out for a disciplinary problem. The next minute Bob would be walking out of his office with his arm around the student's shoulder with the biggest smile on his face just chatting up a storm. He always turned a negative experience into a positive experience. His smile and sense of humor will never be forgotten. Truly a great man and will be missed by all.

Thanks coach, because of you I never had trouble in school, I always had some one to show my report card to. You took me to your home for pot roast. You watched over me when I had no one else qualified to do the job. You kicked my stubborn butt enough to get me into college. You treated me like your own son. You made me a better athlete than I ever dreamed I could be. I am so very thankful for how you held me and so very guilt ridden that I never made the time that God knows I had, to see you after we spoke on the phone.
I have and always will love you for how much you looked out for me, got in my face, and demonstrated Gods love to me when I could have just as easily slipped into God knows what.
I will see you again and I know your feeling better now
And I hope your lovely bride will be able to carry on in your physical absence.
