Peggy Harmon Obituary

Peggy Davis

Harmon

Marshall - Peggy Davis Harmon, 72, of Marshall, passed away peacefully at her home on March 10, 2016.

Mrs. Harmon was born July 10, 1943 in Buncombe County to the late James and Portia Coates Davis. Peggy was employed for thirty six years in the Southern Appalachian and the Liston B. Ramsey Centers for Regional Studies at Mars Hill University. Richard Dillingham, her co-worker, has said: "Peggy Harmon was the Appalachian 'Tall Woman' on the University campus in the Appalachian Room and the Rural Life Museum." Her Heritage work in the Centers at Mars Hill resulted in the preservation of hundreds of Appalachian documents and artifacts. Peggy's mountain research assistance with students and scholars contributed to those documents and to numerous Appalachian publications: Appalachian Memories by Lillie McDevitt Clark; Upper Laurel and Her People by Delia Tipton Brittain; Mines, Miners and Minerals of WNC by Lowell Presnell; The Minstrel of the Appalachians: Bascom Lamar Lunsford by Loyal Jones; Through the Long Years, MHU; The Face of Appalachia and On Earth's Furrowed Brow by Tim Barnwell.

Surviving are her husband of 38 years, Nathan Harmon; aunt, Anna Ruth Wallin; sister in laws, Ellen Coomer and Suzie Capps; cousin, Bessie Coates.

Peggy was a very generous and loving person. She enjoyed gardening, her animals and life. She will be missed by those who loved and knew her.

A funeral service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Friday, March 11, 2016 in the chapel of Madison Funeral Home with Reverend Harry Culbertson officiating. Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. Saturday in the Davis-Harmon Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Madison County has lost a great treasure and one of the kindest souls I have ever met. She always had a word of cheer on her lips, a smile on her face, and kindness in her heart. She will be missed.

Thank you, Peggy, for your friendly and tireless assistance to students and researchers at Mars Hill. You are for many of us "the face" of the Archives!

Peggy was such a faithful, unassuming friend. She assisted me in several projects, going out of her way to receive and classify materials, do research in the Ramsey Center archives, and extend her unique style of personal support. My life was enriched by knowing her.
