Eugene Burke Obituary

Eugene A. Burke, 68, of the Parsons section of Wilkes-Barre, passed away Saturday afternoon, Aug. 16, 2014, at his home.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, he was the son of the late Eugene A. and Dorothy (Blaum) Burke.

Gene was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War, serving for three years in Vietnam and Korea. He was employed as an iron worker for Local 489 for 17 years and later became a selfemployed photographer and owned Burke Photography of Parsons.

Gene was an avid soccer fan and had a passion for the sport like no other. He was a pioneer for youth soccer in the Wyoming Valley and formed the Parsons Rowdies in the early 1980s and later the Wilkes-Barre Celtic Club. He served as president of the local chapter of U.S.S.F. Referees and president of the Wyoming Valley Youth Soccer League. He owned a soccer specialty store called Soccer 94 in Parsons for eight years.

He was a member of St. Benedict's Parish, Parsons, the NRA, Forks of the Delaware Historical Arms Society, and the Cody Museum, Cody, Wyoming.

He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, going to auctions, playing poker, hunting, trap shooting, listening to loud music, singing, good wine and whiskey, and of course watching numerous soccer matches.

He and his wife, the former Margaret "Peg" Hogan, celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary on Jan. 24, 2014.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, Peg, are his children, Megan Kutch and her husband, Jason, Dallas; Eugene Burke and his wife, Amy, Kingston; grandchildren, Cole and McKenzie Kutch, Chloe, Torey and Eugene Burke, brothers and sisters, Mary Pat Mager and her husband, John; Dorothy Jean Timek, and Kathleen Burke, all of Wilkes-Barre; Charles Burke and his wife, Geraldine, Hanover Township; James Burke, Mountain Top; Edward Burke, Plainville, Conn.; and Christine Patrick and her husband, Joseph, Wilkes-Barre; mother-in-law, Peg Hogan Dubaskas, Kingston; sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Burns, Kingston; many nieces, nephews, family and friends.

The funeral will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Corcoran Funeral Home Inc., 20 S. Main St., Plains Township, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Benedict's Parish, St. Dominic's Church, 155 Austin Ave., Parsons, with the Rev. Joseph A. Kearney, pastor, officiating. Interment with military honors will be held in St. Mary's Annunciation Cemetery, Pringle. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

To the Burke Family,
Our deepest sympathy on Gene's passing. He was an inspiration to youth and parents alike and he will be deeply missed. His commitment to the game of soccer not only through coaching but also through refereeing was nothing short of admirable and we will remember him always. We all have lost a good friend.
