PAULA SANDLER Obituary

Dr. Paula Margery Sandler, 62, died at home in Memphis on April 20, 2015, of suicide. We ask that you open your heart and offer compassion without judgment for those that suffer from illness rooted in stigma, trauma or shame; this was how Dr. Sandler practiced medicine. Sadly, she succumbed to severe depression, leaving behind bereaved friends, patients and colleagues. Known for her intelligence and empathy, Paula loved the ocean, enjoyed live music, theater, going out with friends, and was devoted to her pets. Paula was a physician, practicing pain management and addiction medicine in Germantown. Paula grew up in Brooklyn, and received her BS in Pharmacy from Schwarz College of Pharmacy and her MD from SUNY at Buffalo, graduating magna cum laude. She did residencies in urology and surgery in Buffalo, followed by a fellowship at Columbia University. After practicing as a board certified urologist, a disabling car accident in 2002 challenged her, but her greatest loss was the death of her beloved partner, Jeannette Lenore Daniel in December 2012, of metastatic breast cancer. Paula was also predeceased by parents, Joseph and Dorothy Sandler Goldberg of New York, sister, Serena Sicherman, and nephew, Andrew Sicherman of Lancaster PA. Paula is survived by great-nephew, John Sicherman (Hohenwarter) of Ohio, and nephew, Matthew Sicherman, niece, Alison Smith and great-nephew, Anthony Smith of New York. There will be no public service. Please remember Dr. Sandler by offering help and hope to someone in need.

I am devasated after learning of the loss of Paula. We had kept in touch over the yrs, but life pulls people in diff. directions & we lost touch. I have thought of her freq. over the yrs. I worked with Paula at Helen Hayes Hospital in NY. She was a urology resident in the late 1990s & during that time I had my 3rd child. We clicked immediately. I have such fond memories of her. She was such a warm and sensitive person. I truly loved her. My husb & I socialized with her. I remember meeting her family and friends at a party at her house in westchester. I truly miss her. The world has lost a wonderful human being.

Paula had wells of compassion that ran deeper than I or anyone could fathom. Although I was her partner for such a short time, my life was immensely blessed by her presence, knowledge and insight.

It is my hope she is at peace, free of pain and reunited with her beloved JD. May we all carry forward the flame ignited by the torch of her compassion.

My comfort now is knowing I have two guardian angels - Paula on one shoulder and JD on the other.

I knew Paula in her 20s. She was very talented, inquisitive, and artistic. (She was wonderful at violin) She had a passionate love of music. She had firm convictions and beliefs and had the courage to find her path to become a doctor against very tough odds. She was a very special part of the lives she touched

May there be great comfort for the people she touched

May her memory be for a blessing

Dr. Sandler will be greatly missed. She treated my mother and my sister for several years and they appreciated and loved her. They have been shocked and saddened by the news that she is gone. Prayers for Paula and her family.

Dr. Sandler will be greatly missed by my husband and I. She has treated my husband for over 8 years. She understood pain management better than any other doctor he had seen. The best thing about her as a doctor was that she really cared about quality of life. As a woman she was intelligent, caring, and had a wonderful sense of humor. Her loss will be felt by all of her patients. Fly away now Doc, smile big, and let your soul be free..We will miss you..
